कोणालाही काही माहिती विचारायची असेल तर कशा रितीने विचारायची ते आजच्या भागात शिकू. अॅडमने काही लोकांना जवळच्या ‘supermarket’ मध्ये कसं जायचं याबद्दल विचारलं. त्याला काय उत्तरं मिळाली ऐका. समजलं नाही तरी हरकत नाही, मी तुम्हाला नंतर समजावते.ते एकमेकांना ओळखतात का? चला ऐकू!

Oh, yes. Turn down here on the left, then…

Adam
Hello! Sorry to bother you. Do you know where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Man
Yes, I do. Go straight down here, thenturn left…

Adam

Hi there. Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Woman 2
Yes, of course I can. It’s just down here on the right…

काय वाटतं तुम्हाला? सॅम, हे लोक अॅडमला ओळखतात असं वाटतं तुला?

Sam
No, I think he was talking to strangers, people he didn’t know. So he was being very polite.

Tejali
हो, आणि तो त्यांच्याशी खूप अदबीने ‘politely’ बोलत होता. त्याने कसे शब्द वापरले ?

Sam
Well, he used ‘please’ a lot! And also ‘excuse me’ and ‘sorry to bother you’ in a polite voice or intonation.

Tejali
हा ... लोकांच लक्ष वेधून घेण्यासाठी त्याने काही अदबशीर शब्द वापरले.

Sam
Absolutely! And then he asked for the same thing, but in three different ways.

Tejali
पहिला प्रश्न परत ऐका. प्रश्नाची सुरूवात कशी झालीये?

Excuse me!  Where’s the nearest supermarket, please?

Tejali
पहिल्या प्रश्नाची सुरूवात होते ‘Where’s… ने , म्हणजे ‘where’ आणि ‘is’. ‘where’ आणि ‘is’.

मिळून झालं ‘Where’s…

Yeah, you can say ‘What’s the nearest supermarket?’ or ‘Which is the nearest supermarket?’

Shall we practise the pronunciation? Repeat after me:

Thank you, Sam! अॅडमचा प्रश्न थेट पण अदबशीर होता. पण आपण थोडं फिरवून पण प्रश्न विचारू शकतो. आता  अॅडम काय म्हणाला ते परत ऐकू. प्रश्नाचा दुसरा भाग तसाच आहे पण सुरूवात बदलली आहे. ऐकूया.

म्हणजे हे कुठे आहे ते मला सांगा. दोन्ही प्रश्नाचा शेवट कसा केला? सॅम काय म्हणतीये ऐका, ती ‘is’ कुठे आणि कसं म्हणतीये ते ऐका. आणि त्यामागोमाग तुम्ही म्हणा.

एक लक्षात आलं का? यात थेटपणे विचारलेलं नाहीये. आणि ‘is’चा वापर वाक्याच्या शेवटी केलाय. आता सरावाची वेळ झाली. Toilet कुठे आहे? हे तुम्हाला  विचारायचं आहे. तुमच्या प्रश्नाची सुरूवात where ने करा आणि त्यात please नक्की वापरा.

शाबास, या वेळी ‘is’चा वापर ‘the toilet’ नंतर करा.

Do you know where the toilet is, please?

Tejali
Good! किंवा तुम्ही, ‘Can you tell me where the toilet is, please? असंही म्हणू शकला असता.

Sam
