Useful expressions

1. at death's door

જ્યારે કોઈ વ્યક્તિ 'at death's door' છે તો એનો અર્થ થયો કે તે મૃત્યુની નજીક છે. તે જીવન અને મૃત્યુ વચ્ચેનાં અંતરને દર્શવવા માટે દ્વારનાં ચિત્રનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે.

• She is really ill. She's at death's door.
• He was at death's door after the accident, but the doctors were able to save him. 

2. closer to [extinction] than feared

જ્યારે કંઈક 'closer to' છે જે 'feared' પણ છે, તો એનો અર્થ થયો કે વિચાર્યું હતું તેના કરતાં પણ સ્થિતિ ખરાબ છે! આ સામાન્યતઃ નકારાત્મક કલ્પનાં સાથે ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવે છે.

• Economy closer to recession than feared.
• Company closer to bankruptcy than feared.

3. face a murky future

'Face a murky future' એટલે ચિંતાજનક અથવા અચોક્કસ ભવિષ્ય સાથે પાર પાડવું. આ ઘણી વખત સમાચાર હેડલાઇન્સમાં ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવે છે. 'Murky' નો અર્થ થાય છે અસ્વચ્છ અને ગંદુ. આ ઘણી વખત પાણીનું વર્ણન કરવા માટે થાય છે.

• Bowler faces murky future after failing to take any wickets.
• Show faces murky future after fall in ratings.
