Hi everyone, Tom here from BBC Learning English in London and today I'm going to tell you what to say after the word 'wish'.
When we're talking about wishes, we're talking about situations which are imaginary or unreal.
To show this, after saying 'I wish', we use the past to talk about the wish, which is in the present.
So, I could say, 'I wish I had a cup of tea'.
Ah, thank you!
Now, if we want to make a wish about the past we need to use the past past, or the past perfect.
For example, I wish I had chosen a more formal shirt before I filmed this video today.
Function/वापर
Wish
We uses ‘wish’ to talk about hypothetical situations – situations which are unreal or imaginary. To show this, we use verbs in the past after ‘wish’.
‘Wish’ चा वापर काल्पनिक परिस्थिती, कल्पनाविलास याबद्दल बोलण्यासाठी होतो. काल्पनिक किंवा अस्तित्त्वात नसलेल्या गोष्टींबद्दल बोलताना ‘wish’ वापरतात.
Wishes in the present
वर्तमानकाळातल्या इच्छबद्दल बोलताना wish सोबत साधा भूतकाळ वापरतात.
I wish I was on holiday right now!
I wish I didn’t have to go to school!
Wishes in the past
तुमची भूतकाळातील इच्छा काय होती हे सांगण्यासाठी ‘past perfect’ म्हणजे संपूर्ण भूतकाळ वापरतात.
I failed my exams! I wish I had studied harder.
I wish I hadn’t forgotten my lunch – I’m hungry!

‘I wish I were…’
When we use the verb ‘be’ to talk about wishes, it is often seen as more formal to use ‘were’ instead of ‘was’.
I wish I were older! Then I could drive a car!
