Hi everyone,

Tom here from BBC Learning English and I’m here to explain ‘have something done’.

This is an expression we use when we pay someone to do something for us.

For example, I have my hair cut at the hairdresser’s.

If I cut my own hair it would look terrible!

The expression uses have, an object and the action which is done to the object. And the action is always in the past participle form.

We can also use the expression in the past.

For example, I had my clothes cleaned yesterday when I was at work.

Have something done
We use this structure when we want to describe an action somebody else does for us.

It often means that the subject causes the action to happen, although somebody else is the person who does the action.

We use have + object + past participle to create this structure.

For example:
The hairdresser cuts my hair.

In causative form, we would say:
Causative form,

I have my hair cut (by the hairdresser).

We often use the past participle form of do, ‘done’, when we are describing actions informally and not in detail.

I have my hair done once a month at the hairdressers.

In the above example, ‘do’ replaces ‘cut’ as it the action being performed is obvious from the context.

Had (past)
When we are describing causative actions in the past, we simply change ‘have’ to ‘had’. The other words in the sentence remain unaffected.

I had my hair cut last weekend.
She had her car cleaned yesterday.

Get

I get my clothes cleaned at the dry cleaners.

As with ‘have’, we can talk about past actions by changing the form of ‘get’ to ‘got’.
She got the door to her house fixed last week. It’s secure now.
