This is star LHS 1903 – and the weird planetary system around it is making scientists wonder.

Astronomers think planets are formed from clouds of gas and dust orbiting new stars. The material clumps together, eventually turning into planets, which evolve alongside one another.

Because of differing conditions like temperature, rocky planets like Earth form closer to the star, and gas planets, like Saturn, form further away.

But in the planetary system orbiting star LHS 1903, the fourth and furthest away planet appears to not follow the rules.

"We expect it to be gaseous, but in reality, we saw it's going to be rocky out there. And so why is it rocky?"

Scientists tested several theories for why this could be, but are now thinking the planets formed at different times from each other, and that the outer one might be the newest.

There's still more research to be done. But some think the study has highlighted something important.

"The Solar System being… like prototypical, the standard approach – we have to move away from that. We have to think that all these alien planetary systems can come in all shapes and sizes. There could be stuff out there that has more of a habitable world that we're just not thinking of yet because we're so focused on the Solar System."
