One of the first jobs of a newly constituted States of Jersey is to elected a Chief Minister and then a Council of Ministers. ![]() There are nine Ministerial positions available covering more or less all aspects of the island government. After being elected the Chief Minister then gets to nominate his choice for each Ministerial position - but this doesn't mean he will get his choices. The Chief Minister has to nominate for each position in turn, other members are then asked if they wish to stand against that nominee. During the vote for the 2008 Ministerial elections only one of the Chief Ministers choices was uncontested. Senator Freddie Cohen will continue in his role as Planning and Environment Minister. Here are all the Ministerial positions and the States Member taking the role of Minister. ![]() Philip Ozouf Treasury and ResourcesThe Treasury and Resources Department will replace the Finance and Economics Committee, carrying out all its work on States budgets and financial policies. It will also be responsible for States property matters, States manpower levels and States employees' pay.
Minister: Senator Philip Ozouf Previous Minister: Senator Terry Le Sueur Economic DevelopmentThe Economic Development Department will continue to have responsibility for all areas of economic policy and development in Jersey, including agriculture, fisheries, tourism and finance. ![]() Alan Maclean It will continue to have an overview of policies that may affect the harbours and the airport, air and sea links, and postal and telecommunications services. It will also continue to oversee consumer and regulatory services. Minister: Senator Alan Maclean Previous Minister: Senator Philip Ozouf Planning and EnvironmentThe Planning and Environment Department will have responsibility for all planning and building control matters. It will also be responsible for Jersey's environment in its widest sense, including environmental policy and regulation, and water resources and waste management regulation. Minister: Senator Freddie Cohen Previous Minister: Senator Freddie Cohen Health and Social ServicesThe Health and Social Services Department responsibilities for health and social services.
Minister: Senator Jim Perchard Previous Minister: Senator Ben Shenton Home AffairsThe States of Jersey Police, the Fire and Rescue Service, the Prison Service, and Customs and Immigration will all continue to come under the responsibility of the Home Affairs Department. ![]() Senator Ian Le Marquand This department will also have responsibility for criminal justice policy, and the registration of births, deaths and marriages. Minister: Senator Ian Le Marquand Previous Minister: Deputy Andrew Lewis Social SecuritySocial Security has responsibility for the administration of contributions and benefits, and will retain responsibility for the Health and Safety Inspectorate, and for a number of employment services including the Work Zone. Minister: Deputy Ian Gorst Previous Minister: Senator Paul Routier Transport and Technical ServicesThis department will take over the responsibilities of the existing Public Services Department. These include waste management, street and beach cleaning, parks and gardens, main roads maintenance and management, footpath and land management, and waste management operations (including sewage disposal, drainage etc.). ![]() Constable Mike Jackson The Transport and Technical Services Department will also have responsibility for on-Island transport policy. It is proposed that Driver and Vehicle Standards, which is currently in Home Affairs, should be transferred to Transport and Technical Services. Minister: Constable Mike Jackson Previous Minister: Deputy Guy de Faye Education, Sport and CultureThe Education, Sport, and Culture Department will continue with its current responsibilities, looking after education, sport, culture and recreation in Jersey.
Minister: Deputy Reed Previous Minister: Senator Mike Vibert HousingThe Housing Department will keep its current responsibilities, including social housing, estates management, and housing benefits.

The role of the Scrutiny is predominantly to carry out reviews of areas of public concern or areas where scrutiny could have significant influence. Another important purpose of scrutiny is to hold Ministers accountable for decision made within each Ministry Priviledges and Procedures Committee
