Political new-comer Senator Ian Le Marquand has been elected as the island's new Home Affairs Minister. He beat Senator Stuart Syvret by 34 to 18 in the vote by States Members. Addressing the house before the vote, Senator Le Marquand - a former magistrate - outlined why he thought he should be elected to the position. He said: "Having been an advocate for 31 year, a judicial greffeir for 7 years and a magistrate for 8 and a half years I believe I have a reputation for fairness, openess and directness and this October more than 14 thousand people appear to agree with that." Senator Le Marquand was the Chief Minister-designates choice for Home Affairs Minister and he was against Senator Stuart Syvret for the role. Senator Syvret explained his reason for contesting the seat. He said: "I'm contesting this post with a great deal of reluctance and sadness because this is one of those seats that should have been contested and there are plainly a number of members in this assembly that are far better placed than me to contest this particular position. "I have to say I'm very dissapointed that those with policing experience or perhaps one of the Constables or frankly anybody apart from me didn't go for it."
