Objective: Help the children improve facilities in their school. The school dinners are unhealthy, the toilets are horrible and everything in the library is old and broken. As usual not everyone agrees about what needs to be done.
Team member Máire introduces the activity and she is available to offer you advice should you need it.
The four characters you need to please are Tomás, Ciara, Sorcha, an tUasal Mac Muiris and Bean Uí Cheallaigh.
Tomás, a pupil, wants:
• to raise money to improve the toilets
• more computers for the library.
Ciara, a pupil, wants:
• healthier school dinners
• a better school canteen
• new rules to stop bullying
• members of the community to be allowed to use the library
• more computers.
Sorcha, a pupil, wants:
• members of the community to be allowed to use the library
• better toilets.
An tUasal Mac Muiris, the headmaster, wants:
• a compromise on the school dinner issue
• improved contact with the community
• to find out what the children would like to eat
• better library facilities
• to invite local people into the school
• better toilets.
Bean Uí Cheallaigh, a parent and a dinner lady, wants:
• better toilets
• new rules to stop bullying
• improved library facilities
• food that children want to eat
• a better school canteen.
Improvements
You are able to make the following improvements:

• new tables and chairs
• new shelves and bookcases for the library
• renovate and redecorate the toilets
• new fixtures and fixings for the toilets
• healthy food options for the canteen
• new rules and signs.

Watch a short video of primary school children talking about a drama they wrote about exclusion. Answer the questions correctly to win school rules about bullying.
• Community Links Research
Watch a video about a primary school project to promote local place names. Answer the questions correctly to win signs to help local people when they come to use the school library.
• Fundraising
Raise money for new fixtures and fittings for the school toilets.
• Letter Writing
Persuade the headmaster to add a new rule to the school rule book.
• Resolve Canteen Menu Conflict
Listen to the different views on what pupils should eat for dinner and decide how you are going to change the menu. Choose a plan that is a practical compromise and gets at least two of the three votes to win healthy options for the canteen.
