Chimpanzees cuddle other apes in distress
A study of bonobo chimpanzees in the Democratic Republic of Congo suggests that apes comfort each other like humans.
The study (published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) said that more 'socially competent' bonobos were more likely to cuddle and calm other apes in distress.
Bonobos that recovered quickly from an upsetting experience, such as a fight, were also more likely to comfort others.
The discovery mirrors findings from studies in children, and suggests bonobos manage their emotions in a very similar way.

NSA intercepts hundreds of thousands of email address
A report in the Washington Post newspaper says America's National Security Agency intercepts hundreds of thousands of email address books every day from personal accounts on the internet.
The report also says the NSA collects contact lists from instant messaging accounts.
The newspaper said it had obtained the information from senior intelligence officials and documents provided by the whistle-blower, Edward Snowden.
The Washington Post said the agency wanted to track the relationships between suspected foreign terrorists and criminals rather than gather personal information from ordinary Americans.
