This department looks after sport, art and all recreational activities and events in the island.  It does what it says on the tin looking at schools, teaching and further education for islanders.  It has a very wide mandate which includes transport, energy and waste policy and conservation.  It also looks after promoting, protecting and improving environmental and public health.  The department looks after the island's Police, Fire and Prison Services, Customs and Immigration.  They try to make sure everyone has somewhere to live and issue housing licences.  They run the Central Services, airports, harbours, Technical Services, Water Board and States Works.  Provides social security for the residents of Guernsey and Alderney and for migrant workers.  Income Tax, Cadastre, States property, States insurance, pensions and the States Technology.  The backbone to the States structure looks after the constitution, rules of procedure and elections.  Working with the Law Officers to ensure what is debated is the legislation that will be enabled.  Public Accounts work with external auditors to prepare reports on the States.  The body that negotiates pay and conditions of public sector workers.  The conscience of the States looks into the processes and delivery of policies.
