Chaos Weekend 2007 - Day 2 - Part 1By Tom Girard Saturday afternoon at the Chaos Weekend saw a more varied line-up and some great action from the bike show side of things. By Saturday lunchtime the Chaos weekend site was beginning to take up the smell of a regular music festival, particularly around the main stage area, that smell being the sickly sweet aroma of mud made predominantly not with water, but with beer and cider. ![]() The EQ's. And it was over this now nicely drying area of mud that The EQ's took to the stage to start the days musical proceedings. Fitting perfectly into the feel of a sunny summer afternoon The EQ's mix of pop punk and synths, along with a good dose of humour, worked well to ease the assembled crowd into the idea of listening to some loud music after what had been, for most, a fairly heavy night. Despite a few problems on a Yellowcard cover, and their comparative inexperience as a band (even though most members have experience in other bands), The EQ's natural charisma and stage presence carried them through today. ![]() The Bake. Following on from them came another band seemingly designed for a summer afternoon, The Bake. Combining funk, reggae and ska and looking like they'd fallen out of 'Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas' they got a few people moving and really impressed with both their covers of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' 'Fight Like A Brave' and Kenny Rogers' 'Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)'. ![]() Typically Norman. Jersey punks Typically Norman were up next and had the dubious task of squaring their American style punk up against the Jet Trike, which had just begun its daily display. Including covers of bands like Rancid and NoFX, Typically Norman started to move things in a heavier direction while still remaining upbeat for the sunny afternoon, sadly their set came to a somewhat inauspicious end when a guitar string broke and a replacement could not be found. By this point in the day the festival ground had filled up nicely and those who had been there overnight were now warmed up and beginning to move, and it was into this prime position that funk rock favourites The Bensons entered… on the back of a quad bike… dressed as members of Big Bad Bensons' Big Bike Club, or the BBBBBC, and ready for a spot of 'camping', though it seems they got the wrong idea about what sort of camping was going on the Chaos Weekend. ![]() The Bensons. Giving their sound a slightly harder edge today to match the bands they were playing with The Bensons were, as ever, superb and great fun to match. Drawing the biggest crowd of the weekend so far, a good number got dancing to favourites such as 'Funky Gibbon' and 'The Amazing Adventures Of Monkey Roodle Ray And His Little Pet Dog Named Spot' but the real highlight of their set came in 'Turbofunk'. Sadly this will be the last time we see The Bensons for a while as their 'Tardrobe Wardis' takes them on yet another adventure, but what a way to leave things it was with all four members on top form and leaving the crowd calling out for more. ![]() Best Bike at the Show award winner. As the BBBBBC left the stage it was time for the real bikers to take centre stage as the Greenman MCC made their show awards for various categories of motorcycle with the main prize of best bike at the show going to a vintage 1932 Harley-Davidson. ![]() Thousand Points of Hate. Following a burnout contest taking place next to the stage things took a turn for the heavier, musically speaking, as Thousand Points of Hate hit the stage. Featuring some of Guernsey's best metal musicians and performers TPOH showed themselves to be one of the best straight up metal bands on the island with singer Stace Blondel once again showing his range of performance in yet another band and guitarist Gordie Liu being able to utilise the metal chops he demonstrates as member of cover band Lucy And The Allstars to full effect, thus showing himself to one of the best heavy rock guitarists on the island. ![]() The Nelkons. As things started to get heavy on the main stage the music began in the beer tent with local rockers The Nelkons starting things off. Their brand of straight forward rock seemed to go down well and they had a good number of people watching them play and for their last song even got a few people dancing in the comparatively chilled out surroundings. And this was all followed by things getting even heavier outside, and some great fun being had in the beer tent thanks to some of Guernsey top cover bands... last updated: 17/08/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Guernsey > Unsigned Bands > Reviews > Chaos Weekend 2007 - Day 2 - Part 1 |
