Chaos Weekend 2007 - Day 2 - Part 2

Things got heavier once again on Saturday evening as some old favourites and visiting faces took to the main stage while the party really got swinging in the beer tent.

Back on the main stage it was time for another band from Jersey to make some noise as the day continued, in the form of Bulletproof. As soon this three piece took the stage it was clear what we would be in for from the Leftöver Crack and Sick Of It All shirts the band were wearing.

Coming across as something like Guernsey's Vietnameasles but a thousand times tighter, and with less bad jokes, Bulletproof unleashed a ska infused hardcore assault on the crowd who replied with the first proper pit of the day and even included stage dives and crowd surfing! All this along with a brief Vietnameasle led stage invasion, this is the way hardcore punk should be done.

For those looking for something a bit mellower the beer tent once again provided with The Wild Stallions playing their mix of prog infused classic rock covers including organs, a flute and once again local guitar legend Gordie Liu proving his diversity and earning his place as local guitar great.

Meanwhile on the main stage another Jersey band were trying to make an impact. Combining the stoner metal stylings of Clutch with some more straight forward hard rock and heavy metal sounds, Unrehearsed came across as a solid bunch of performers. However at no point did they do anything to grab the attention of the crowd who soon had dispersed to partake of other festival activities.

Following The Wild Stallions it was time Clarence Cleanwater and The Hand To Gland Band to take to the stage. Playing predominantly covers of classic and blues rock tracks they fit perfectly into the vibe of the beer tent stage and accumulated a good audience throughout their set.

With the sky darkening as night began to fall the crowd gathered at the main stage were treated to a rare appearance from local cyber thrash legends Mechanical Lobster.

Sounding just as brutal and vital as they did when I last saw them perform over two years ago, Mechanical Lobster seem to have not lost a step, even with the inclusion of new guitarist Daz 'The Colonel' Carre. Running through a selection of their now classic tracks alongside some newer material Mechanical Lobster got the faithful moshing from the off and by the end of their set had the biggest pit of the weekend so far going complete with stage divers and crowd surfers. Lets just hope it's not another year before we see them again.

Next up on the main stage were one of the two headlining acts tonight from the UK, The Defiled. Having gained a following in Guernsey thanks to last years Chaos Weekend performance, their mix of metalcore and death metal was always going to go down well.

Describing much of their music as "songs about killing people" this wasn't for the fainthearted, but, it succeeded in encouraging yet another huge pit which was only exceeded in size by the presence the band possessed on stage. Ending the set with their keyboard player smashing his instrument to pieces they were undeniably joint champions of the day alongside Mechanical Lobster.

Again the beer tent provided a contrast to the music on the main stage as Saturday was headlined by U.S. Monster Trucks, as ever they put on a great show that added a new twist to some old favourite pop-rock tracks that had the whole front half of the tent dancing.

Finally up on the main stage were another band from the UK, Enemo-J. With little time left before the midnight curfew came down they put their all into getting things going, however, their one dimensional angst metal largely failed to make an impact with all but the especially eager and their attempts at working the crowd tended to come across more as arrogance than charisma.

This though was really a minor blip on what had, for the good majority of the day, been a fantastic lot of music from a great set of bands ranging from classic blues and prog rock to hardcore punk and cyber metal.

Sunday

Over night however things took a turn for the worse, weather wise, as the rain started to beat down on the tents and stages and the wind began to rise. When the previously happy campers began to crawl from their tents on Sunday morning they discovered that the main stage had been water logged and much of the equipment had been rendered unusable.

Undeterred it was decided to move the action into the beer tent but while the equipment was being sorted and the fun was continuing disaster struck as the beer tent collapsed! Sadly this spelt an end to the weekend's festivities as there was no longer a venue to house things but it did really help the event live up to its name of Chaos.

Despite Sunday's disaster both the Green Man MCC and Discharge crews put on a great weekend's show and did their best in the face of adversity and I for one am already looking forward to next year.
