Julie Clayton

What’s the most exciting/biggest news story you’ve ever covered?
Anything which is breaking while you are the reporter covering it is the most exciting! It's good to cover the stories that attract national interest - foot and mouth is the obvious one but also big court cases.
I also get a real buzz out of covering a story which can make a real difference to people who otherwise wouldn't have had their problems resolved.

Which famous/well-known people have you spoken to during your career?
The usual round of politicians Tony Blair, Michael Portillo and William Hague as well as some of the soap stars supplementing their salaries by opening events in the county.
I'm a bit of a book worm and really enjoyed interviewing Sophie Kinsella who wrote the Shopaholic books, I wish I could write something that could make people laugh out loud.

Where was your first broadcast?
In the Carlisle newsroom in May 2001. I read my first bulletin that month and I’ve never been so nervous in my life – I more or less managed a five minute bulletin in less than four I was speaking so fast.

Where else have you worked?
I’ve worked on most of the local newspapers in North Cumbria, including the Times and Star in Cockermouth, the News and Star in Workington and The Cumberland News in Carlisle

What other jobs have you done besides broadcasting?
Waitress, barmaid, shop assistant, cleaner ….. lambing assistant. Need I go on?

How long have you worked at BBC Radio Cumbria and why do you like it?
Since April 2001. I love it because the job is so varied, no day is the same as the next. It’s a real buzz getting a news story on air as it’s breaking

What are your local connections?
I’m a Carlisle lass born and bred although I did defect to West Cumbria for three or four years to live in Cockermouth and Great Broughton.

What would you be if you weren’t a journalist?
Unhappy – I have to say. I can’t think of anything else I really want to do, apart from win the lottery and spend my time travelling from one palm-fringed beach to the next.

Other interesting information?
I helped set up the first chest pain emergency response scheme in the north of England – the Broughton First Responders, I can juggle and I've appeared on Deadringers… but that's a long story.
