What jobs do you do at BBC Radio Cumbria? I’m the Editor responsible for all station activity - the buck stops here! I’m responsible for all editorial matters, news and programme output, staffing and finance, recruitment, Health and Safety, strategy, policy and administration for all services we control i.e. station output, New Media, Ceefax and tv newsgathering responsibilities for BBC Newcastle and BBC Manchester. In short - if it's here - its my responsibility. I have a regional responsibility also serving on the BBC North East and Cumbria management team. How did you get into a radio career? I pestered my local station while studying for my degree at Hull University. In my second year at university - I’d broken through the BBC Radio Humberside front door and presented a monthly student programme and a weekly record request show. Where was your first broadcast? At BBC Radio Humberside - in the spring of 1974. (Is that really 27 years ago?) Where else have you worked? BBC Radio Blackburn which later had a name change to BBC Radio Lancashire. I was a ‘Station Assistant’ from 1976-1982. BBC Radio Northampton - as a Producer from 1982-1985; BBC Radio Cumbria - as West Cumbria Producer 1985-1988; BBC Radio Northampton (again) as Programme Organiser then Assistant Editor 1988-1994; BBC Three Counties Radio as Acting Managing Editor 1994-95; BBC Radio Cambridgeshire as Managing Editor 1995-1998 and now BBC Radio Cumbria - Editor 1998-present. What other jobs have you done besides working in radio? As a student - worked in a bank in Rochdale, in a Keswick garage repairing tyre punctures and as a petrol pump assistant. I’m a dab hand with an oily rag! How long have you worked at BBC Radio Cumbria and why do you like it? Cumbria is my adopted home county, I love the people and I love the area. The station has a very talented team and the output we broadcast is a true team effort. It’s a joy to work with such committed staff who share their love and enthusiasm for Cumbria with everyone else. What are your local connections? I spent all of my teenage summers in Keswick working locally during the day and visiting the local hostelries in the evening where I developed an intimate relationship with Jennings beers. My mother was a student evacuee during the war when her Liverpool College transferred to Keswick (Fawe Park and the current Queens Hotel) to avoid the bombs falling on Liverpool. My parents, long retired, live in South Lakes.
What would you do if you didn’t work in radio? Write books. I have a couple of novels in me! What would listeners be surprised to learn about you? I like rock music, read poetry and love solitude. What do you do when you’re not at work? Walking locally, fishing, listening to music, reading (history/biography) and theatre/music performances. |
