Adam Mart

What jobs do you do at BBC Radio Cumbria?
Primarily I’m involved in the technical side of the station. My main concern is making sure a signal that is produced at one of the station’s outside broadcasts gets back to base, and that this signal is of a good enough quality for station output. This involves mixing various signals together using a combination of Radio Cars, Outside Broadcast vans, mixing desks and other bits of kit. I rig (and de-rig!) the gear and carry out a wide variety of tasks that need to be carried out in order to get a presenter on air. I also deal with a small amount of ‘on station’ engineering matters, fleet car management and I operate studio mixing desks as and when the need arises. I also have lunch sometimes!

How did you start your career at BBC Radio Cumbria?
It was a simple phone call that got me the interview. I needed to gain a place on the station really. They say the media industry is all about contacts and I guess I proved that one.

Where else have you worked?
Primarily in London for a company called The Sanctuary Group - a large media company in Shepherd’s Bush.

What other jobs have you done besides working at BBC Radio Cumbria?
I’ve worked as a white van man, as a film studio runner and as a Assistant Recording Engineer, all for The Sanctuary Group

How long have you worked at BBC Radio Cumbria and why do you like it?
I guess I’m the baby of the station as I joined just before Christmas 2001. With regards to why I like it - the atmosphere here, both on the station and in Cumbria itself, is great. But more importantly the work itself is a great challenge. To be working in such an attractive area with the demands that the job creates on a daily basis appeals to me no end!

What are your local connections?
I was born, raised and educated in Penrith itself just down the road from Carlisle.

What would you do if you didn’t work at BBC Radio Cumbria?
I’d probably try my hand at setting up my own recording studio locally.

What would listeners be surprised to learn about you?
What you see is what you get I’m afraid, apart from…….!

What do you do when you’re not at work?
At the moment I’m in the process of teaching myself to play the acoustic Bass Guitar. I also play drums in a band that I’ve just joined, coupled with this is the fact that I listen to as much, and as diverse a range of music as I can lay my hands on.
