The Derwent flows through Matlock Bath
Derbyshire's newest walk covers a total of 55 miles - from Ladybower in the north to Shardlow in the south along the River Derwent.

FACTS

Many (but by no means all) of Derbyshire's loveliest walks are within the Peak District National Park.

The Peak District National Park covers some 555 sq miles.

Half of the population of England lives within 60 miles of the Peak District.

The highest point in the Peak is Kinder Scout at 2,088 ft (636m).

This is an opportunity to explore the length of the River Derwent in either one large chunk or in several, perhaps more manageable blocks.

There is plenty to see along the way, including the Derbyshire Dales and the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

It all ends at the historic inland port of Shardlow and Derwent Mouth, where the Derwent flows into the River Trent.

We're not going to attempt to give you a step-by-step guide to the whole walk as the route is huge, but below are a few guidelines and milestones.

Wheelchair access logoThose suitable for wheelchair access include Ladybower Dam, The Thornhill Trail, Matlock Parks including Hall Leys and Lovers Walk in Matlock Bath and Cromford Canal from Cromford to High Peak Junction.

Distance: 55 miles
Transport: The Derwent Valley is well served by both train and bus. By rail, the Hope Valley Line serves the northern section of the area with regular services rom Manchester and Sheffield.
By bus, services from Derby, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Manchester and Nottingham serve many parts of the route.
