RHS Garden Hyde Hall

Set in 360 acres of land, RHS Garden Hyde Hall was donated to the RHS in 1993 by keen gardeners Helen and Dick Robinson who, over many years, transformed the windswept Hilltop into a beautiful garden. Today, Hyde Hall's Clover Hill is a patchwork of colour, with vast swathes of grasses and herbaceous perennials flowing through its landscape. Hyde Hall is located in one of the driest parts of the UK, with an average rainfall of just 600mm, and its iconic Dry Garden shows how a beautiful garden can be grown without ever needing to be watered by choosing the right plants for the right place.

Contrast this with the Robinson Garden, one of the original planted spaces which features plants that thrive in boggy conditions, or take a walk around the Wild Wood to see some of the 100,000 trees that have been planted on the estate since 1998. In 2017, Hyde Hall opened its Global Growth Vegetable Garden which features unusual varieties of fruit and vegetables from around the world, and in winter 2018 the new Winter Garden will be officially opened, full of plants that are at their most beautiful during the winter months. Look out for the Sky Meadows also opening soon, which will eventually create up to 50 acres of perennial meadowland looking out over lush Essex countryside.

Check out what’s on during the school holidays for plenty of garden-themed family fun, or see dazzling displays of many different plants at the Hyde Hall Flower Show in August. In summer, be sure not to miss the spectacular Floral Fantasia created in collaboration with Thompson & Morgan. For more information and to find out what’s on, visit the website.
