Dewi - we salute you

We may have ruined breakfast for thousands of people across Wales yesterday morning. For that, I can only apologise.

Dewi Griffiths' decision to call time on his 60-year BBC career also brings to a close one of Radio Wales' most popular and iconic strands, A String of Pearls

Dewi Griffiths

After a notable career in sport drew to a close, Dewi started the weekly show in 1988 to cater for people, like him, who grew up listening to music from the golden age of showbusiness.

It has consistently been one of our top-performing programmes over the last 26 years. So, when the great man taps you on the shoulder and tells you he thinks it's time to bow out, imagining what happens next doesn't half give you a headache.

There was never a question that we would continue to play Dewi's repertoire, it was just a case of how. But quite quickly I came to a view that there was only one person to entrust those 'pearls' too.

So from 12 October, Roy Noble moves to 9.30am on Sundays and will take on Dewi's request slot – the Golden Days post bag – as part of a revised musical playlist. Roy's usual mix of guests and observations on life will remain. We'll announce full details of the new Sunday schedule at the end of the month.

In the meantime, Dewi – we salute you and everything you've done for BBC Radio Wales. We're planning a ticker–tape parade in the lead up to the last show on 28 September. More details in the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, the stars are out on the afternoons this week. Wynne Evans' Big Welsh Weekend has Clare Balding and Earth, Wind & Fire on Friday; Sir Roger Moore joins Eleri Siôn after 3pm today. On Wednesday, Eleri speaks to the Radio Wales Artist of the Week, The School: you'll hear their new song When I Fall in Love featured across the station this week.

As stars go, they don't come bigger than Bryn Terfel, who performs at Proms in the Park in Swansea on Saturday night. Beverley Humphreys and Llinos Lee will have live coverage from 7pm.

Thursday sees Brian Meechan return with a new series of Wales at Work. It also sees the start of the Invictus Games – Prince Harry's sporting event for wounded soldiers. Our reporter Jason Phelps is there for Radio Wales.

The Leak with Tom Price got off to a strong start last week. Listen to the podcast here. On Friday, comedians Lloyd Langford and Yasmin Akram will pour over the week's news with Tom and his team of reporters. Free tickets are available for the recording

And hopefully, one of the things they'll be able to report on is a thumping win for Wales away to Andorra in our Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday. Rob Phillips and the Radio Wales Sport team will be there.

PS. I've just noticed we've made the New York Times this morning. We're off to the Big Apple in October to mark the centenary of Dylan Thomas' birth. We're going to be broadcasting a live production of Under Milk Wood, starring and directed by Michael Sheen. The venue, Manhattan's 92nd Street Y theatre, was the very first place the play was performed back in 1953. Exciting times.
