A slightly autumnal feel this weekend

Derek Brockway

Sunday is the first day of autumn from a meteorological point of view and it will feel slightly autumnal, especially at night with cooler, fresher air arriving behind a cold front tonight.

I can however promise plenty of dry weather this weekend along with some cloud and sunshine with the best of the sunshine likely on Saturday.

On Sunday, more cloud is expected, especially in the north. In the south, the cloud will be higher making the sunshine weak and hazy but still bright and dry.

The Rhyl Air Show is taking place this weekend and the weather looks good. Saturday will be the sunniest day with good visibility and a moderate breeze will make it feel fresher than of late.

Sunday will be cloudier but mostly dry.

The Cardiff Mardi Gras is taking place at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

If you're going along, it will be dry and sunny but turning quite cool in the evening with a clear sky.

As we move through September and the rest of the autumn season, our weather in the UK normally begins to change as shown in this graphic from Matt Hugo:

Northern latitudes begin to cool while further south it remains warm or very warm. This temperature contrast has the effect of making the Jet Stream stronger.

This means deeper areas of low pressure can form over the Atlantic bringing us spells of wet and windy weather.

Next week, the weather looks fairly settled with high pressure close by. It will become warmer and more humid too.

However, later in the week there are signs that it will turn cooler and more unsettled with some rain and showers.
