I love a big idea. I’m a sucker for them. An idea which leaves me feeling ever so slightly anxious about whether it’s even possible…

Do you remember when Felix Baumgartner jumped from space, live on YouTube; ‘The Murder Detectives’; the true story of a murder investigation but it felt like drama and Educating Essex which saw 65 cameras installed to record life at a school in Essex.

With all these projects – and there are lots more examples - it’s clear the development teams and the producers are having a total blast; having the time of their lives by playing with form, fusing genres, mashing up filming techniques.

The audience love it and there’s nothing stopping us doing the same. So here’s an outline of my vision for the commissioning future, to give you an idea of what I’m looking for.

First, a word about scheduling and time slots. Let me be clear; I don’t want us to be constrained by scheduling slots. We can be far more creative if we think about the programme first. And if it’s not right for BBC One, it can be premiered elsewhere – iPlayer for example. We’ve got a choice of platforms; let’s use them.

On to the commissioning; what kind of ideas am I looking for?

BBC Wales has some major drama projects in the pipeline and we’re looking for more. We know that co-production works and we’re looking to add others to the slate.

Comedy is a genre that has been underrepresented for years and we’re looking to change that, by commissioning and developing comedy ideas; short form or long form. We’re funny (honestly, we are…right?), so let’s make content that gets people laughing.

We’ll be announcing a live factual event commission soon, and if it works, we’ll be looking for others. A live event is a way of increasing the noise and drama around a solid factual programme. It’s more contemporary in style and tone and involves more than just the programme itself; it includes BBC Wales’s radio teams, social media content teams and others. We’re after large-scale, impactful live events.

I’m also after contemporary documentary, telling the story about the Wales we live in today in surprising and delightful ways being creatively ambitious wherever possible. And factual documentaries with an entertaining edge. They’re hard to get right but when it’s well done the audience love it. And let’s bring Living History back to our screens. Bring us ideas of real scale.

So, I want comedy ideas. I’m after noisy live factual event pieces which unite the nation

I want to raise the bar for contemporary docs but please play with form. And I’m after a slam dunk of a living history project.

I know that developing the next big idea takes some doing and I’m hoping the new approach to commissioning will make that process simpler, at least. You may know about these already, but it’s worth re-capping

● We’re now into rolling commissioning with the occasional landmark commissioning moment. When this happens you will know about it and be given clear steer about it in good time and through a soon to be revamped commissioning page.

● Where we can we will give a quicker “yes” or “no”.

● We’re moving to BBC Pitch from April which means you’ll be able to track your ideas. If you’re not already signed-up to Pitch, let us know and we can help.

● Work with us to develop your ideas.. We know what we want so talk to us.

I can’t wait to hear from you. So, let’s work together to produce outstanding content and delight our audiences.
