Tony Jordan's Nativity: I play Mary

Just watched the first episode of 'Nativity' absolutely brilliant can hardly wait for the next part - well done BBC

I have just watched 'Nativity' and loved the sensitive portrayal of this story in history.

I have never commented on any programmes before. I have just watched the first episode, so impressed. I am looking forward to sharing it with my children tomorrow. I really thought the presentation brought the story to life. Having heard Tony Jordan interviewed about the programme I had high expectations as he really seemed to have considered the different characters and their reason for being part of the story. I am not disappointed. Top job

What a brilliant programme. Already I wish it didn't have to stop on Thursday. Definitely the best religious broadcast ever.

I am so delighted that the BBC have put this wonderful programme on our screens and at 7.00pm, when families can watch together. I was spell bound - the locations; the colourful cotumes; the acting - loved it!

I am delighted to see that my views are echoed by so many others. I do hope that the BBC will allow the general public to have regular access to this series via a DVD. The atmosphere in episode one is so special. I was sceptical before I began to watch it but was enthralled. I don't watch a lot of TV programmes and I don't think I've ever posted a comment on here about one, but I just felt I had to congratulate the BBC on The Nativity. Doing a very well-known story, the most famous in the whole Bible, can't be easy but this one is fresh, realistic, well acted and beautifully produced. It involves you in the characters and makes you wonder what it was really like. I'm hooked!

Absolutely cracking. Well done Beeb. Well done Tony Jordan. It's about time the Nativity was given some grown-up treatment like this. Brilliant! Thank you.

Absolutely wonderful! Fabulous writing. I was pleasantly surprised by the sensitivity being shown to the story. We are so used to Christianity being ridiculed. Love the theme of the bridge from Heaven to earth which is exactly what it is all about and the magi using the allegory of the father intervening. So refreshing! Write more Tony Jordan - please! So far I have found this moving and beautiful production a delight. Tatiana Maslany's portrayal of Mary is mesmerising. Amidst the over-stuffed Christmas scheduling this stark, simple, profound story has been a real blessing.

Have watched the first two episodes so far and am very impressed. I'm really pleased it that the story has been shown in a manner faithful to the account in the New Testament, but I also have to say that I am really impressed with the actors who play Mary and Joseph (Tatiana Maslany and Andrew Buchan). Excellent stuff.

Wonderful Stuff!!!

This is most beautifully done - Mary and Joseph are wonderful and memorable in their parts. Can we get a DVD later on?

I'm so glad that the BBC is finally showing a Nativity story on TV. I can honestly say this show is wonderful and I really feel like it's Christmas for the first time in this country. Congratulations BBC and keep up the good work!

My husband and I have so much enjoyed the first two episodes. This series must certainly have great appeal to children and adults, to Christians, non-Christians and to those who have no religious belief at all. Please, Aunty, may we have some more of the same. How about a similar series about the history of Judaism or Islam or Buddhism for example.

Such a beautiful dramatisation! Thank you so much BBC and well done for broadcasting this, at a time when Christianity is far from fashionable, even at this time of year. Like others here, this is the first time I've commented on a TV programme and I also can't wait for the next episodes and don't want it to end. Last night's episode was brilliant. Mary's humanity and God's amazing rescue mission were suddenly brought to life in a completely new and relatable way.

This is a simply amazing series for all of the reasons expressed by other viewers As someone who has been a Christian all my life, this has brought a very familiar, fundamental part of my faith not just into vivid relief but it has also drawn out new dimensions and meanings, something which even the most skilled clergymen struggle to achieve in Sunday services. Most of all, however, thank-you BBC for making this prime-time viewing and for re-aligning the focus of Christmas...

Both my wife and I are thorougly enjoying this wonderful production of the Nativity.

But why oh! why does the BBC shoot itself in the foot so often? Immediately after episode 2 finished there was an advert for another programme and children singing

"Twinkle twinkle little star and shit hitting them in the eye" Has common sense gone out of the window? Is this rubbish really necessary at this time - especially in a childrens' programme?

Really loving this version of the Nativity. As others have said, so good to have a grown-up version shown.



Two niggles

1 Where was Mary's "Fiat" - Behold the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done unto me according to thy word?



2 What happened the Magnificat when Mary visited Elizabeth?



These two parts are really essential to the story.



In spite of these, well done to the writer and the whole cast - very well written and acted, with really good pace about it. This will surly become a classic retelling of the story.

A great portrayal of a familiar story. The characters are very real, very human, and draw you into the story, equally the language is contemporary making it more relevant to a modern day audience, whilst the settings are also interesting and realistic. Thank you for bringing the nativity story alive in a new way.

Its OK but the entire Magi story is frankly more mythical than anything else. So putting it centre stage and making it all up gets in the way. Actors are brilliant but pardon me - they are virtually all white, anglo saxons. Is this a Victorian rendition then?

A great series! What a perfect show to have lined up for us during this festive time, I never really thought about the story of Mary and Jospeh since my childhood and what a way to bring it back to life. I love how you play Mary and I'm a massive fan of Andy Buchan through Garrow's Law, I agree with the post above me, I wouldn't mind at all if you were to repeat this every Christmas BBC :p

I've just watched the third episode and I'm loving this. I've been a Christian over 10 years. I'm in my honours year studying a BA in Biblical and Intercultural Studies. So far I've found this a faithful, relevant, thought-provoking interpretation.



This is only my second time ever commenting on a blog but I just had to congratulate the BBC, especially for taking the courageous decision to run with this series and show it on prime time. Please can we have more like this and this series on DVD?

My daughter and I have been watching the adaptation avidly and we have been both mesmerised and moved. It's been such a wonderful experience to sit together having the benefit of Tony Jordan's visual experience each evening. We are fairly regular Anglican worshippers but having this has allowed a greater empathy with the main characters and to consider their own feelings. My daughter (who is 5) is able to ask questions and we have explored issues which have not so far come to light in our traditional religious experience this Christmas so far.



Hopefully this will make our Christian experience more informed. It would be good if people realised how we can all become reflective through considering our own faith in God and in ourselves.



Overall, well done to the actors and the writers for a wonderful series. The costumes, lighting and colours are truly spectacular. Hopefully this will be on television again, although we have been watching the iplayer versions anyway, so we can enjoy it all over again!

I was deeply moved by The Nativity because it was apparent that the producer had been drawn into the material and so drew me the viewer in too. I am grateful to Tony Jordan for producing this drama, to the actors for playing their parts so convincingly and to the BBC for putting it on, at 7 pm too. Delighted with the way you have managed to get under the skin of the events of the day. Have been a christian for a long while and am delighted when I see Bible events portrayed as they were in the raw flesh so to speak.



You've done a superb job with MARY and I am now so much more aware of what she must have gone through, the rejection, humiliation etc. with Joseph too (have watched Jarrows Law) and can more readily understand his reactions.



I love anything which gets away from the RELIGIOUS view of Mary (I have nothing against this in principle or the statues) but the bald realities of how God has used people, and how they really have responded always grips (they were just like us!)

Brilliant telling of the story. The Bible only gives so much detail so you have to imagine the rest but this is a really good interpretation. Well done BBC.

I just can't wait for tonights episode but such a pity it wasn't scheduled to end on christmas eve. The whole adaptation has been captivating and I am loving every minute.I have spent the week in bed with flu and missed so much of the razzamatazz, shopping and build up to christmas but this telling of the nativity has encompassed for me the true spirit of christmas. Many thanks to all the actors and production team for this little gem.

Great programme and well scheduled, very moving

Just watched the last episode - it was great and really moving. A good start to celebrating the birth of Jesus. Well done BBC for showing it at a prime time when religon is not as important to some as it should be.

Cards on table, I’m a non-believer for whom the traditional story was just that, a story. I had no intention of watching this series but just happened to see part of episode 2. Gone was the cosy traditional telling and in its place were believable people with a realistically edgy script. I should not have been surprised for the script was by Tony Jordan who’s credits include Eastenders [and the classic “I’m your mother” duff-duff], Life on Mars and Hustle. Impressed, I made a point of watching episodes 3 and 4. Make no mistake, and whether you believe or not, this production was one of the highest order. To everyone involved I extend my congratulations.

THANK YOU THANK YOU i am always keen to compain that BBC neglects the Christian festivals but The Nativity has been wonderful. Your production has shown this to be a real story with God coming to a particuar time and recognising the political struggles faced by the characters. So relevant for today. It has been wonderful to have so much relevant programinng across BBC this year.

Have just watched the birth of Jesus. I am a Christian and love Jesus very much and this has been the highlight of my Christmas. I am so blessed that somebody has finally portrayed this as to how it most probably could have been like in frail human terms Thank you the BBC for showing it and thank you for the cast and production and the writer. God bless you this Christmas and always as we look to Jesus the saviour of the world. He really is there, he transformed my life and the world and continues to do so. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasing life.

What a fantastic portrayal of the Nativity, all the actors were so believable. I especially liked the reason why Jesus was born in a stable, I'd never thought about Mary being outcast in her society before. Thank you BBC for such a great production and for the scheduling - well done and thank you.

We usually complain about the BBC and the programme quality, however after watching the Nativity we were very impressed and what a fantastic 4 part play. Showing the true meaning of Christmas and what it is all about. We are non-religious but felt this was absolutely fantastic. WELL DONE BBC

I cannot remember the BBC screening something so closely based on the Christian gospel during a prime time slot or indeed over Christmas. My wife and I were deeply moved by the quality of the direction and photography, and by the sensitivity, poise and depth of the acting. The poetic license taken by the script seemed to us both fitting and compelling. How good to be reminded that the birth of Jesus was unattended by the NHS. The words attributed to Balthasar (I think) prefiguring the New Testament and echoing those of the OT prophets were thrilling. The whole experience was profoundly moving, especially if you believe. Thank you for making this beautiful sequence and for screening it.

Fantastic, relevant, & just perfect to re-ignited the jaded spirits & let us know what Christmas is really about. I have watched each episode & been enthralled, finally succombing to tears at the last one tonight, on Joseph's acceptance of Mary & the arrival of the shepherds & Magi.It was also brilliant to see the story told with more emphasis on the devoutly religious Joseph & his feelings about his espoused being pregnant whilst still professing to be a virgin. It is easy to understand this, & something that is usually overlooked in the telling of the story.

Well done BBC, Tony Jordan & all the actors involved, particularly Andrew Buchan & Tatiana Maslany...oh, & a special word of praise for the brilliant portrayal of Herod by Vincent Reagan.

What an inspiring 4 nights of viewing. Gritty, real, moving, well acted and scripted. Well done all involved. I was taken back 2000 years ago and could feel all the political, and social tensions around the story. When is the DVD coming out!

As a Christian, I thought I was quite familiar with the Nativity but this brought it to life in a whole new way and I found it very moving and thought provoking. I feel compelled to comment on how much we enjoyed The Nativity. Maybe everyone who is planning on celebrating Christmas should watch it. You dont have to believe in it but there is more to the festive period than filling your trollies with rubbish and purchasing presents that have no meaning.

It just shows that it is still the greatest story of all time and the actors portrayed it wonderfully.This time of year is not all about the commercial garbage that people seem to buy into, but celebrating all things wonderul in life and coming together with friends and family. I think all children should watch it to understand the true meaning of Christmas.

I hope to see a series like this at Christmas a regular thing. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, the writing was terrific and evoked alot of emotions.

I thought this programme was an outstanding depiction of the nativity story. It was heartwarming to see something which was realistic and stayed close to the bibilical narrative. The portrayal of the personal issues behind this familiar story was thought provoking. Thank you BBC for showing this excellent programme.

I don't think I have enjoyed any BBC production as much as this. It has been truly wonderful family viewing, with the different strands of the story woven together skillfully. While artistic licence has been taken, it was refreshing to see the drama staying largely true to the Biblical accounts. Excellent acting, beautifully shot - bravo BBC!

I thought the Nativity was a really great program. It managed to portray the Christmas story in a really faithful way without being over sentimental. It got the supernatural over in a very naturalistic way which was really believable. It presented all the harsh reality which Mary would have had to have faced. Very well done all involved and very well done BBC for putting it on.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, at last a real (not cheesy) portrayal of The real Nativity story. I loved the way Tony Jordan made the characters come alive so we could share and understand their struggles, doubts, faith and the ultimate hope the birth of Jesus brings. I look forward to sharing this program with my children so they will see the difference between the santa story, the tooth fairy story, the easter bunny story and the reality of the Nativity which we as a family will certainly celebrate with joy and hope this year in the midst of all the madness which we in the West have, wrongly, come to associate Christmas with.

I think a special mention should be given to the writing of Gabriel - no wings or flashing lights, just an ordinary-looking bloke whose words were the magic. When my little children are old enough to understand I would like them to watch this series at Christmas time rather than Alvin and the Chipmunks! Thankyou BBC!

Brilliant portrayal of what it must have been like for Mary & Joseph. Thank you for bringing the true meaning of Christmas to life in 2010.

This was a brilliant production of such a well know Biblical narrative & I so enjoyed it. It was great the way the writer brought in the Magi early on in & also showed a little of the pressures of being under Roman rule, especially for the shepherds. It also explored the more human side of the relationship betrween Joseph & Mary & the tussles Joseph had with Mary's pregnancy. It looked to be a thoroughly researched piece of screen play well done to BBC for airing it last 4 nights

Many thanks to the BBC for broadcasting "The Nativity" It was beautifully portrayed, Scripturally accurate and employed enough "Literary license" to flesh-out the characters and make us aware of their intense doubts and fears. The portrayed attitudes of "Friends and relations" in Nazareth and Bethlehem, to Mary's "shame" say much to Yeshua's up-bringing - and add weight to the prophetic words of Psalm 69. Well Done!

Thank you BBC for this wonderful production, a lovely talented cast with a refreshing build up to the big event. I found this creative story telling similar to that of a modern day 'soap opera'.

I couldn't get out to advent services because of the bad weather ...BBC these last four nights have helped me focus on the grass roots of Christmas.

What unanimity among so many posters--glad I'm one of many who thought this was brilliant. Just watched the final episode on iplayer, thought I wouldn't shed a tear but that moment with the joined hands was wonderful, and Thomas kissing the baby's foot--very moving.

So, when is Tony Jordan going to do another part of the most amazing life ever?

Our household is in shock. We cannot believe we have had the pleasure of viewing something uplifting, wonderful and inspiring on our tv set. What a magnificent production and what beautiful timing just before Christmas. We've been turning the pages of our Bibles and comparing the biblical account with the programme. Most of all we have enjoyed the humanity of all on screen from the key characters to the community at large. We feel as if we were right there...yes, we agree with so many who have asked for more of this type of programming...more of the Bible. And please do give us the dvd.

I really felt moved to write, 'the nativity' was an amazing programme! Left me in tears when Joseph took Mary's hand, so cool! And the production looked beautiful. I watched with my little kids and they also loved it. Thank you for helping us share the real meaning of Christmas.

What an amazing production ... the script was strong, very well researched, particularly loved the colours and sights and sounds of the Middle East ... and so appreciate the way Tony Jordan has kept to the Biblical script though obviously padding out with some fantastic dramatic content.

Like a few people on here, I registered just so I could comment on this series. This is the most beautiful, moving production I have seen on TV for a long time. The writing, the set, the acting was just amazing. The way the characters were portrayed totally sucked me in and I think I felt every emotion with them from the happiness to despair to hope and love. There is not one thing I can criticise about this series and feel quite despondant that it's over. I am desperate to know if the BBC will release this on DVD. At a time when Jesus is rarely the focus of Christmas, a series like this brings Him right back where He belongs. My faith has increased from watching this and understanding more the reality of it.

Thank you so much BBC for the brilliant interpretation of the Birth of Jesus. I enjoyed every moment of it. From the very real acting; the emotions and empathy stirred, the returning focus to the real meaning and beginning of Christmas and encouraging me to read my Bible. Thank you very much! What a lovely way to start christmas. This programme brought to life this wonderful story in such a realistic and moving way. The writing was brilliant, bringing the biblical words to life and weaving them into the conversations in such a natural way. The costumes were fabulous. It was so nice to see colour, patterns and embroidery when so many portrayals of this time seem to be drab and 'brown'. The acting was first class and I commend all in taking on roles that have such deep set meaning for us. I have always felt for Joseph, the confusion that he must have felt was very clearly portrayed and the holding of hands brought tears to my eyes. Well done and bless all invloved in bringing this story to life.

I rushed in from Carol Playing only to discover I had forgotten to turn on the box to record. I was so disappointed. I have looked forward each evening to The Nativity, it is so well written and gives a completely different perspective on the very well known Nativity story. Can't wait for it to get on bbc iplayer.

This is a series that brings to life the story in a very human way without demeaning the spiritual element. It deserves to be available in DVD and hope the BBC will be able to arrange this.

I would also like to see future projects like this, maybe using some of the same actors who i really loved- especially the actors portraying Mary and Joseph-i thought they were excellent!

We have watched and recorded on our freeview box all four programmes and must say well done BBC for producing a beautiful account of the nativity. The acting was outstanding, the costumes and location authentic. It is so refreshing to see the true message of Christmas on our TVs and not the usual cynical depiction of christianity and all things christian. One line which stays in my mind is the question Thomas asks his wife 'how can one man change the world?', which I took as reference to Christ as well as the shepherd. Please repeat, release the DVD, give us more of this quality. Many thanks!

Thoroughly enjoyed the "Nativity" watched every episode. I was thrilled with fact that it was so close to real life yet authentic and true to the Bible story. This is the first time I have ever commented on any programme.

Just finished watching The Nativity - I absolutely loved it - well done BBC - I was hooked right from the start - I am a lapsed Catholic but found this approach so humanly believable. We had this vision of the Virgin Mary as so holy as not to be humankind - that she was a walking saint - but this Virgin we saw was in awe of herself being the chosen One - and it was more believable and watchable. Loved it.
