A VISIT TO PRIMAVERA SOUND FESTIVAL 2011

Post categories:

Producer Jax|15:12 UK time, Wednesday, 22 June 2011

So, the annual pilgrimage to my favourite Festival Primavera Sound in Barcelona. My first visit was back in 2004 when the festival took place at Poble Espanol. Now in its 11th year, the festival takes place at the Parc Del Forum - an idyllic setting with sea views.

Primaverasound has gained a reputation for having the best line up of any music festival in the calendar and this year was no exception, with Pulp choosing the venue for their first comeback show, as well as performances from legendary influential artists like Suicide, PIL, John Cale and Pere Ubu.

There were a few teething problems on the first night including massive queues for the bars as organisers thought it would be a good idea to use top up Oyster style cards for payments which unfortunately didn't work, leaving punters thirsty - and increasingly tetchy - for the first few hours until cash bars were hurriedly set up.

There were also noticeably more people than previous years which was making me nervous: had my favourite festival reached a tipping point?

I decided to head to one of the smaller stages to check out some new international bands for Introducing.

The Adidas Originals stage was the place to hear new artists from around the world, showcasing bands from Spain, Canada, Chile, Poland, Austria, Brazil, Australia and the UK.

First up BBC Introducing favourites Bearsuit from Norwich, who pulled in a decent crowd for their Thursday night slot.

And then I watched a set by five-piece rock outfit The Car Is On Fire from Poland, who played an enjoyable set swapping their instruments and encouraging some interesting crowd participation.

Other highlights from Thursday included the much talked-about new duo Cults, then Ducktails, Caribou, and on the bigger stages Grinderman, Big Boi, PIL and Suicide - the latter performing their debut album in its entirety.

One of the great things about the festival is the warm Barcelona night air which continues well into the early hours, no jacket required! Then instead of passing out in a stuffy tent you can retreat to the comfort of your hotel or apartment bed and revitalise yourself for the next late night/early morning.

PrimaveraSound is a great chance to see new emerging talent on small stages, this year curated by Pitchfork,Vice and ATP.

So on Friday, to a Canadian showcase with a new band called No Joy who channel MBV shoegaze with Sonic Youth guitar lines; Laura and Jasamine provide the guitars vocals (and hair!)

Then back to the Adidas Originals stage to see a band from Galicia called Garotas Suecas who make a joyful noise with keyboards, adding a modern twist on their blues-driven riffs - some nice harmonica work too.

Other highlights from the night were a peaceful interlude with James Blake over on the Pitchfork Stage and of course 6 Music's very own Jarvis Cocker wowing the Spanish and very Brit-filled audience with the first of Pulp's comeback shows.

On the final day we tracked down an Austrian band called Frances International Airport who we've been playing on the show for an interview. They told us about what the new band scene is like in Vienna (which you can hear in this week's show).

First memorable performance of the night was from Hackney band Yuck, in the early evening sunshine on the ATP stage.

A quick dash over to see Fresh on The Net favourites Tuneyards Merrill Garbus providing an amazing show, looping her voice live and playing tracks from new album Whokill. Then a very long walk to Warpaint who played on the new Llevant stage. Their hypnotic, meandering sound works well in a festival setting but I was disappointed not to see them on a different stage later in the evening as the large Llevant didn't feel intimate enough for them.

Other highlights included PJ Harvey who drew one of the biggest crowds of the weekend with a 'Let England Shake'-centric set.

Then off to Suicide Of Western Culture, and finally an exhilarating performance from LA rap collective Odd Future, complete with stage diving and a full-on stage invasion with the hyped-up,chanting audience refusing to leave the stage.

Despite the crowds and the excessive corporate branding this year, the festival still retains a laid back atmosphere and for music fans (and probably most 6 Music listeners) the line up is probably the best you will find on the festival circuit. I'm hoping that PrimaveraSound will retain its uniqueness and eclectric line ups and not become victim of its own success.

Low Duo in session at 6 Music

On our last show before the Glastonbury weekend we showcased some of our favourite acts who'll be appearing on the BBC Introducing Stage this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We opened with a stonker, too - Cornwall songwriter Patrick James Pearson with his piano-driven Iggy-inspired power trio on their song American Lover. For the full list of Introducing artists who are appearing there together with stage times, see the main Introducing website.

Our session and interview guests were Sheffield’s Low Duo. Low by name perhaps but focussed, upbeat and positive in person. The Greenwood brothers were a delight to meet and produced a haunting performance featuring just their trademark lone guitar and single voice plus a good helping of atmospheric reverb.

World Music influences could be heard in the Tasmanian trioTiger Choir and London's splendid Ruby & The Vines who'll be playing Glasto - not on the Introducing stage - but down in Shangri-La at Club Dada on the Friday night. And if you're going to be at the festival yourself, don't miss last week's guests Future History, who will be gracing the Introducing stage at 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

And producer Jax Coombes returned from holiday this week, having caught up with Austria's Francis International Airport at Primavera festival last weekend in Barcelona. To hear them chatting made those of us who'd stayed home in the grey and rainy UK deeply jealous at having missed this eventful and sun-soaked festival.

We have no shows next weekend during 6 Music's special live-from-Glstonbury schedule, but we'll be back in the small hours of Sunday July 3rd with a Glsto Special of our own featuring live tracks and interviews from the BBC Introducing Stage. If you happen to be going to the festival yourself, you can follow me on Twitter @freshnet for up to date news from the Introducing stage - and by all means drop by and say hello if you want to.

Tash, Tom & Erin K - click to zoom photo

We kicked off tonight with the pulse-raising London quartet Beaty Heart, three quarters of whom are drummers. Now based in Peckham they met at Goldsmiths University and have been turning heads with their "psychedelic drum pop". Click through to their website to hear their excellent debut single 2 Good for yourself.

Our studio guests were the antifolk duo Erin K & Tash - originally from Texas and Amsterdam respectively but founded in London. "Thank you for bringing us on your show!" they wrote afterwards. "We had so much fun and you were all so nice to us. Hope we sound ok - we were both pretty nervous." They needn't have worried - they gave a great interview and the new version of their single Coins sounds brilliant.

Here at 6 Music we try to choose tunes on the basis of what comes out of the speakers, rather than on their genre or rating on Hypem. Tonight we ranged rom the gutsy political punk of Fighting Fiction to Shona Foster’s carnival pop and Jake Hart’s venture into deep House/Dubstep - and that was just in the first hour of the show. I've said it before and will say it again: you recommend your favourite online tunes via our Recommend Music page - and if we like em, we'll play em. Simple as that.

DJ Target’s 100% Homegrown Downloads each week are a reliable source of tasty tips. This week his pick came from the artist known as G.R.E.E.D.S. - initially from his love of all things edible - but later as an acronym for Generating Rhymes to Engage the EnlighteneD Soul. You can download the track for free via Target's podcast page at 1Xtra.

"100 words to blow my own trumpet?" asked Paul Colto a.k.a The Android Angel on our Recommend Music page. "Well, this is probably the best song I’ve written." As longstanding fans of his work we happen to agree in any case - check out the gorgeous Brooklyn Bridge, based on a dream Paul had before heading out to the Big Apple to record his third album.

I've always had the greatest respect for Janice Long's musical taste ever since she first introduced me to The Smiths and Beastie Boys back in the 80s. A couple of times she even invited me to sit in as guest presenter on her Radio 1 shows around that time. Unlike most of her R1 contemporaries from 25 years ago she's still championing new & interesting artists two hours a night, five nights a week on her Radio 2 shows. And that's where our session tracks - by the fine London songwriter Jake Morley and his band - came from this morning. Nice one Janice - hope we can return the favour before too long!

Grace Petrie

Ruth Barnes would be proud of the way we have female artists to the fore on this morning's show. Earlier this year Ruth was the first to tip us off about Elena Tonra (aka Daughter) - and this morning we had an exclusive first play of her session track In The Shallows - recorded when she came in to play live for Lauren Laverne a couple of weeks back. We also heard a recording of her gorgeous current single Landfill performed live on air.

Our studio guest meanwhile was feminist firebrand Grace Petrie. The powerful social commentary of her music caught the attention of Billy Bragg and she's just finished a short UK tour with Emmy The Great. She's gearing up this month for her second appearance on the Leftfield stage at Glasto where we hope to catch up with her later this month. In August she'll be gracing (see what we did there?) the mainstage at Greenbelt. Ms Petrie is an inspired and genuinely DIY artist who's going places fast.

Having devoted his Radio 1 show last week to the nostalgic medium of tape, Huw Stephens brought us Welsh Introducing favourites Truckers of Husk with their tribute to the cult website Awesome Tapes From Africa. With the weekly flourish of flirtatious innuendo we have come to love and expect, Bobby Friction recommended the Sir Aah with another piece of social commentary that pulls no punches - featuring Crooked I and the splendidly named Royce Da 5’9” from hiphop outfit Slaughterhouse.

And our Thanks For Your Support chain stretched out across the North Sea this week to Denmark. Soren Bonke from the London band Klak Tik passed on the baton to his fellow Dane Cæcilie Trier and her Chimes and Bells project - now signed in the UK to Bella Union. If we can track her down in her native Copenhagen, next week Cæcilie will be offering us a tip of her own next week. We can hardly wait...

Future History

Why does so much great music come from Brighton? Does the seaside air breeed great musicians, or do great musicians gravitate there because of the seaside air. Ben Nicholls aka Dennis Hopper Choppers comes into the latter category and has been inspired (perhaps by by his new environment) to write his greatest single to date. Grasscut's wildly original electronica on the other hand seems to have sprung out of the very landscape of the South Downs. And barging their way back onto the show came Everyone To The Anderson - we enjoyed High Brow, Low Brow, No Eyebrow so much last week we had no choice but to play it again. And fine songwriter Shona Foster may be Scots in origin, but she too has somehow ended up embedded in the bohemian Jewel Of The South Coast.

MCs Bluzey and Swift-Lee aka Future History made a welcome visit to the studio to fill us in on us in on their future plans, give us a glimpse behind their Lock Stock inspired video, and spilt the beans on their most immediate and exciting news - their upcoming Glastonbury debut on the BBC Introducing stage this month on the Saturday afternoon. From BBC Wales Bethan brought us another delightful track - this time from from The Method. Horns a plenty and yet again in the show more psychedelic flavours to swirl one back to the 60’s. And DJ Target brought us the youngest artist ever accorded the accolade of being 1XTra's Homegrown Download of the week. RJ has already been making music for 4 years, but had no upcoming news or events to plug for the simple reason that - being 13 years old - he'll be at school for the forseeable future.

Thanks in no small part to the tireless efforts, energies and enthusiasm of Andrew Marston from BBC Hereford & Worcester, Cheltenham's Wychwood Festival featured an official BBC Introducing stage again for the second year running. He sent us two cracking live tracks recorded there by our old friends Pandas and People from Redditch. Having watched them grow as a recording project over the years, it was terriffic to hear them transformed into a tight and punchy live four piece propelled along by a cracking drummer.

And in a feature borrowed from NowPlaying@6Music (my Friday Suppertime show on 6 Music) we heard from guest contributors Adam and Parri from culturedeluxe.com. They share 6 Music's enthusiasm for White Denim whose new album D has been supported here over the past few weeks. As usual you can find all the artists featured in the show via the links below - or for the next 7 days hear the whole thing in full on the BBC iPlayer. The Caezars

We kicked off this morning with A Drunken Man's Speech... No, don't be silly - not literally. We fell in love with Fuzzylogicbaby when this song came to us as DJ Target’s Homegrown Download a couple of weeks back.

Three quarters of The Caezars (above) joined us in the studio from various different points of the compass - ahead of their appearances at the Ray Davies-curated Meltdown and Isle Of Wight festivals next weekend. We gave another spin to Heartache Overload from their recent 3-track EP. Tom liked their Hep Cat Bop (whatever you do, don't call it Rockabilly) so much that he even pressed a copy of the CD into Bob Harris's hand afterwards. Bob was in the 6 Music studios for Round Table with Steve Lamacq this week. And don't forget, listeners, CaeZars is spelt with a Zee.

The energy was kept up after the interview by the astonishing Oxygen Thief with his one-man aural assault Terry Nutkins Salute. Who would have thought a human voice with a single acoustic guitar could wreak such devastation. "Accidents" he sternly tells us "Do not happen - they are caused!" Our session tracks came from friend of the show Chris Long who recorded them as part of BBC Manchester's coverage of the Friends Of Mine Festival in Cheshire last weekend. Chris produces their BBC Introducing show with Sam Walker and sent us tracks by two of his favourite artists: Dutch Uncles and I Am Blackbird.

We played Context MC's atmospheric masterpiece Listening To Burial at the beginning of May and Huw Stephens recommended it to us again this week. The Norwich producer and rapper - known to friends and family as George Musgrave has enjoyed widespread support from BBC Introducing across the networks since 2008.

Bobby Friction's outrageous introductions are almost as enjoyable as the banging tunes he sends us every week from Asian Network. This morning's tip came from the New Delhi trio Nau Sau Bai whose name translates as 922. Their track - rapped in both Hindi and Punjabi - is simply called 922 Anthem.

It's always interesting to see what will come up next in our Thanks For Your Support chain where each week the baton is passed on from artist to artist. Last week we heard Jack Cheshire (who's from London) with the title track of his album Copenhagen (recorded in Sweden). This week he recommended an artist who actually IS from Copenhagen: the splendidly named Danish musician Soren Bonke - holed up in East London with a former bandmate and a stray Kiwi plus any number of instruments under the moniker of Klak Tik. Their song Ernest & George is breathtaking - and as good as anything you'll hear on 6 Music at any time of any day of the week. Click and enjoy!

The Flares with TR

A wide mix of genres for your listening this morning. Slides slid us nicely into the start of the show - followed by the squeakyclean sound of Real Fur who've just finished the first musical tour of the UK's launderettes on record. Special mentions for Arcs and Trauma and Everyone To The Anderson while Tasha House from BBC Introducing In Northampton recommended local outfit Strangers with their 80’s infused dance track If I Found Love.

We revisited North Wales with Chloe Leavers and her gently crafted single All These Things before heading out West to catch up with our old friends Trwbador and a quick incidental plug for their fine compilation Owlet Music Volume One. Back in Cardiff, Bethan brought us Winter Villains - a band so brand new they've yet to play their debut gig. Despite the unseasonable name, their captivatingly ethereal track Icebergs could add sparkle to the sunniest of summer days.

From Alsager, pronounced [awl - seyj - er], we were joined in the studio by Sam and Tony from The Flares. As distinct from the similarly-named but unrelated Essex trio Flares we played last week. Blurry eyed from celebrating Sam’s 18th Birthday they told us about their upcoming appearance at the semifinals for the Surface Festival in Birmingham.

From Tom's NowPlaying@6Music show, guest contributor Owain Paciuszko from God Is In The TV supplied us with not one but two fantastic suggestions: an extract from Colour Music’s divine track Yes followed by Alex Dingley - our fourth Welsh artist featured in this morning's show. Oriole is a sweet treat of quirky guitar pop such as you’d expect to hear if the Moldy Peaches had a full band.

And our session tracks came from Whitby's Blue John Benjamin, accompanied by his brother Tom on trumpet and bass clarinet. Their extraordinary session was recorded and passed to us by the excellent Bob Fischer at BBC Tees.

But actually every tune in this morning’s show is a gem of one kind or another - otherwise we would't be playing them. You can listen to every track in full on the artists' own websites via the links below - or for the next 7 days hear the entire show in full on the BBC iPlayer.
