We kicked off tonight with the pulse-raising London quartet Beaty Heart, three quarters of whom are drummers. Now based in Peckham they met at Goldsmiths University and have been turning heads with their "psychedelic drum pop". Our studio guests were the antifolk duo Erin K & Tash - originally from Texas and Amsterdam respectively but founded in London. "Thank you for bringing us on your show!" they wrote afterwards. "We had so much fun and you were all so nice to us. Hope we sound ok - we were both pretty nervous." They needn't have worried - they gave a great interview and the new version of their single Coins sounds brilliant.

Here at 6 Music we try to choose tunes on the basis of what comes out of the speakers, rather than on their genre or rating on Hypem. Tonight we ranged rom the gutsy political punk of Fighting Fiction to Shona Foster’s carnival pop and Jake Hart’s venture into deep House/Dubstep - and that was just in the first hour of the show. I've said it before and will say it again: you recommend your favourite online tunes via our Recommend Music page - and if we like em, we'll play em. Simple as that.

This week his pick came from the artist known as G.R.E.E.D.S. - initially from his love of all things edible - but later as an acronym for Generating Rhymes to Engage the EnlighteneD Soul. "100 words to blow my own trumpet?" asked Paul Colto a.k.a The Android Angel on our Recommend Music page. "Well, this is probably the best song I’ve written." As longstanding fans of his work we happen to agree in any case - check out the gorgeous Brooklyn Bridge, based on a dream Paul had before heading out to the Big Apple to record his third album.

I've always had the greatest respect for Janice Long's musical taste ever since she first introduced me to The Smiths and Beastie Boys back in the 80s. A couple of times she even invited me to sit in as guest presenter on her Radio 1 shows around that time. Unlike most of her R1 contemporaries from 25 years ago she's still championing new & interesting artists two hours a night, five nights a week on her Radio 2 shows. And that's where our session tracks - by the fine London songwriter Jake Morley and his band - came from this morning. Nice one Janice - hope we can return the favour before too long!
