Grace Petrie

Ruth Barnes would be proud of the way we have female artists to the fore on this morning's show. Earlier this year Ruth was the first to tip us off about Elena Tonra (aka Daughter) - and this morning we had an exclusive first play of her session track In The Shallows - recorded when she came in to play live for Lauren Laverne a couple of weeks back. We also heard a recording of her gorgeous current single Landfill performed live on air.

Our studio guest meanwhile was feminist firebrand Grace Petrie. The powerful social commentary of her music caught the attention of Billy Bragg and she's just finished a short UK tour with Emmy The Great. She's gearing up this month for her second appearance on the Leftfield stage at Glasto where we hope to catch up with her later this month. In August she'll be gracing (see what we did there?) the mainstage at Greenbelt. Ms Petrie is an inspired and genuinely DIY artist who's going places fast.

Having devoted his Radio 1 show last week to the nostalgic medium of tape, Huw Stephens brought us Welsh Introducing favourites Truckers of Husk with their tribute to the cult website Awesome Tapes From Africa. With the weekly flourish of flirtatious innuendo we have come to love and expect, Bobby Friction recommended the Sir Aah with another piece of social commentary that pulls no punches - featuring Crooked I and the splendidly named Royce Da 5’9” from hiphop outfit Slaughterhouse.

And our Thanks For Your Support chain stretched out across the North Sea this week to Denmark. Soren Bonke from the London band Klak Tik passed on the baton to his fellow Dane Cæcilie Trier and her Chimes and Bells project - now signed in the UK to Bella Union. If we can track her down in her native Copenhagen, next week Cæcilie will be offering us a tip of her own next week. We can hardly wait...
