The Cathedral Quarter is currently jumping - thanks to the Festival Of Fools and the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival. The cobbled streets are pounded by fire-eaters, fez-wearing buffoons, rockers, rollers, chancers and poets. On Saturday I watched the Lost Brothers at the Black Box. They feature at least one member of The Basement from Omagh, and they write songs that are doused in melody and emotional worth.
I've also seen a fair amount of the Panama Kings, most recently at a secret party near Shaftsbury Square, a night that was apparently left out of some heinous Fellini film. Also recommended is the Lawrence Watson photo exhibition at the University of Ulster on York St. Lawrence is an old compardre from the NME. He has documented the glory years of hip hop, the arrival of Blur and Britpop, the return of Paul Weller and the resplendent strangeness of Tom Waits.
