Waltzing into Strictly, it’s Irish country singer, Daniel O’Donnell!

From his native Donegal to the Strictly dance floor, Daniel O’Donnell joins Strictly.

Known for his dedicated fan base and international following, Irish folk and country singer Daniel O’Donnell has sold over 10 million albums worldwide.

He first rose to public attention in 1983 and has since become a household name in Ireland and Britain alongside considerable success in the US and Australia too. In 2012, he became the first artist to have a different album in the British charts every year for 25 consecutive years.

53-year-old Daniel will certainly hope to become a Strictly fan favourite as he’s known for his close relationship with his fan base – he even hosts a tea party for his fans outside his childhood home every year!

Born and brought up in the village of Kincasslagh, in County Donegal, Daniel was the youngest of five children. His first taste of showbiz came in his early twenties when Daniel left college to join his sister Margo’s band. A few months later he decided to branch out alone using his own savings to record his first single.

Despite admitting to have “played at a lot of dances”, he says he has had “no formal [dance] training whatsoever.” Always a good sport, Daniel says: “No I haven't done anything special to prepare… I thought about taking a few dance lessons but thought it wouldn't be allowed” - fair play sir!

As well as finally learning some formal steps, Daniel is looking for some other new experiences from Strictly, saying: “I have never had a spray tan. Will I have to have spray tans? I suppose I'll try anything once!”

Although some things may be second nature to Daniel: “I've worn a few jackets with sequins on them through the years. In moderation I'm game.”
