Albert and me

Presenter

You know when the heating is back on in Matt’s house that things are really cold. And another week of it too apparently. Those of us working the Bank Holiday may have got it right after all. Store up those days for when the sun shines and Mr Celsius is feeling slightly more generous…

So it's wrap up warm for the Royal Albert Hall tonight and take your seats for the 2016 Radio 2 Folk Awards. We get our extra half hour to take us to kick off (as they say in the folk clubs). It is, as you know by now, quite an evening with some of the highest standards of musicianship you will hear anywhere.

It’s quality that's what it is. And quality you don’t have to dress up for, which doubles the pleasure. There’s some Show of Hands, some Richard Hawley, Michael Morpurgo, Joan Armatrading, Rhiannon Giddens and The Unthanks all wandering past at some time or other. And the half time show is a highlight-the young folk musicians take centre stage and really blow the place apart. Most are still about 10 years old but play like old timers.

Then we go for a drink.

So no tunes to pick really-give yourselves a day off the choon-chasing and enjoy some of the UK’s finest..
