Photo of Andy and Ruth

With Malcolm as MC, a stunning dress and surrounding by beloved friends and family, Ruth's low-key wedding in The Ship was a romantic affair. Bling may have been lacking but the event was full of love. We've got lots of exclusive pictures from the wedding for you.

Like real life, weddings in TV dramas are hectic affairs for all involved in their production. The entire cast has to be suited, booted, primped and preened. Hair, make-up and wardrobe departments work frantically to bring the vision to life.

Clare Pettifer, the busy costume designer on the show, filled us in on the background to Ruth's stunning wedding dress.

Originally Clare bought a dress in a High Street store sale earlier in the year. Then she subsequently spotted a vintage 1950s oyster lace dress in Glasgow. In the storyline Ruth's grandmother, Rose, was the first person to wear this dress, which Ruth and Jo had loved as children. It fitted Morag Calder perfectly, with a few modifications. Maggie Scobbie, who worked on Helen Mirren's costumes in The Queen adjusted the dress to fit.

As we blogged about previously, the costume team always have a camera to hand, to keep a record of what the cast have been wearing and when. These are placed onto continuity sheets, which you can see a sample from below.

The wedding was saved!!!! It was a happy wee moment in shieldinch. This was well balanced with the sadness of wee boab leaving!!! He's the heart and soul of sheildinch so i hope he's coming back soon???

Eileen had a few tears at the wedding - lets hope she lays off poor old raymond!!!

    We want wee boab back!!!

Phew! So the replacement wedding dress fitted Ruth perfectly! What are the chances, eh? :)

As always, brilliant episode - nearly felt a wee glimmer of compassion for Theresa, but not quite yet. Gradually the Adams/Mullen family have become the main family in Shieldinch, and now that there's been the fairly recent addidtion of Bob and Molly, there's much more scope for future story lines. As far as Bubba coming back, gie the wee man a chance, he's only just away!

Top marks to all involved in the wedding epsiode. Costumes etc were fab, and the acting first class. I so want Johnnie Beattie to be my Papa, and Eillen McCallum is just magnificent as Liz.

Thought Ruth's wedding was a wee bit duff to be honest. The Bob/Theresa/Scarlett stuff was great though, nearly felt sorry for Theresa. Still wish Lenny and Lydia were there though.

Yet again brilliant episode, the way the wedding all pulled together was so lovely and as far as I'm concerned was so much more enjoyable than all the frills and bling that normally happen, hated to see Bob so gutted, but again Bob and Iona's duet was beautiful, they really should do an album together, maybe for a charity.........

I have watched River City since it began and love it. I have one question regarding Ruth's wedding dress. When Malcolm arrived with the dress, Joanne asked if it was Gran Rossi's dress, but Malcolm's name is Hamilton. Was this an error in the script?

    Hi Jules,

Thank you for your comments – it’s great to hear you are enjoying the show. Ruth actually asks if the dress was Nana Rose’s. Hope this helps clear things up. Keep watching please!

All the best, Anna and the River City team
