What's the mystery sound in the owl nest ?

In the background, in the last second is the sound of a woodpecker drumming. There are two sounds, I think the trill is the call of a chaffinch. Somehow the two calls have blended together, so the sound is a hybrid.

Could it be a Raven?

I thought at first it sounded a bit like a marsh frog. Not very good at this but thats what I first thought.

The sound is of...the owl chicks asking for for food.

I have just listened to nearly all of the bird sounds on the RSPB website and i have to say it sounds remarkably like a Great Spotted Woodpecker at a distance to me, hope you get to find out.

it does sound like a great spotted woodpecker but a mistle thrush can also make this rattling sound. its a hard one!

I reckon that's a woodpecker-I often have them hammering away on my house!

If it were a threat to the barn owl i think the barn owl especially with young would of moved more quickly and looked maybe more worried. which eliminates in my opinion most other birds of prey and maybe other owls?.

Because other birds may think the barn owl is a threat to them. one guess possibly it could be a bird that maybe accidently flew into or near the barn and is making an alarm call.

i think it is too deep to be the 'little birds' like blue tits and blackbirds etc.

Maybe a bird from the corvid and magpie family? deep enough and still thinks the owl is a threat to itself?

another guess maybe a green woodpecker? or great spotted tapping on a tree.

this is why the time of day would be good as then we can eliminate the woodpeckers if at night :)



another guess is another barn owl communicating to that barn owl. with a throaty clicking sound. but then i would of expected that barn owl to react more.

Its one of the chicks making the noise, they make this noise when a piece of food is being taken away from them, one of them has a piece of food and another one is trying to take it...its a get off its mine noise..xx

Death Watch beetle drumming in the rafters?

It could be two things:

a deathwatch beetle hammering in the wood (it sounds too loud for this)

a member of the corvid family, probably a jackdaw.

I reckon it's the motorised lens on the camera packing up!

It sounds like a death-watch beatle to me. It is probably boring its hole in some wood right next to the sound equipment.

I'm pretty sure I heard a grey squirrel making a similar noise today but not sure, there was also a bird mobbing it so it could have been the bird

The reason I went for Death Watch beetle is the adult owl seems to look up, which leads me to believe the sound is coming from within the building somewhere.

Doubt it was one of the chicks as the adult looked quite interested in the noise.

Whatever it is its eminating from the viscinity of the camera, judging by the direction the owls are looking, I'd say a crow in the eaves.

Could it be a frog, that has been caught and stashed for future consumption, complaining?

i would say its one of the chicks just seen the other parent enter with food.



this sound is also sounds very similar in courtship times,but a lot more powerfull and trilling in 10 second bursts.

Why are you so serious about it? It's obvious what it is! Don't you make strange sounds whenever you want to? What's wrong with that? They are just like human babies, making strange gurgling noises and things.

If think its two birds maybe a woodpecker and a chaffinch that called out at the same time.

First impressions are that its a vocal sound. However, it is very similar in tone and duration to the tapping made by deathwatch beetles. Given the location, it seems plausible.

We think in our house that it is a chaffinch and possibly a woodpecker at the end of the tape. Brilliant shows everyone liking the Skomer Island too we live not far from there in Pembroke.

I think the sound is from a squirrel, maybe the same one that was jumping on the window in the den behind Kate and Chris !!

Without any doubt this sound is, quite clearly, a weasle. I have heard this many times coming from the small crevise in my rockery

Sounds like a magpie to me...they often make this rattling noise when they are hunting through a hedgerow. It always reminds me of the sound they gave the Veloceraptors in Jurassic Park!

Sounds more like a frog to be honest!! We used to have frogs in our pond and they sounded exactly like that!!

This is right of the wall but i think its either a polecat or a ferret are there any in the area sounds like my ferrets used to when they were about to be fed

We have a Magpie round our way that sounds like that, maybe the noise is distorted by echoing round the slate roof?

It has to be a Badger! One (with a bone in his mouth) came out of a bramble bush and made a similar, but more threatening, noise at my two German Shepherds who then tried to hide behind me!

its a frog!!!!! honest, i had a barn owl, she hated frogs and every time they were in the garden the croaked like that and she made the same noise. she also made that noise at pegs.
