Springwatch 2011: What did you think?

Eloise, aged five and a half has been glued to the telly every night - we've loved the programme! Today she's been in the garden watching tadpoles with legs sunbathing on the side of the pond, and yesterday pond dipping finding caddis fly larva. Thanks elizabeth

I think Springwatch has been flawless every year. The series is a great way of educating the public on what goes on around them, and brings to light some of the concerns we have about our declining species and what we can all do to help. I don't think the series should ever stop being made, as wildlife is always different with something new to see, and we all constantly need reminding of what a special country we live in, and how privileged we are to share it with some of the worlds most beautiful wildlife.

This is the best show EVER!!! Thanks Springwatch for another holl load of wildlife action looking forwards to AUTUMNWATCH can't wait it's going to be great!!!

during the Easter break I loved getting up at 4am till 12pm watching the webcams constently and I never can miss an episode what a briliont cast you have well done all of you.

How sad that our favourite programe ends this evening - Springwatch & Unsprung have been unmissable, as always. We have been educated, entertained & inspired by our favourite trio of presenters, guests, viewer's contributions and, most of all, the wildlife! Please don't change a thing - just more of the same, please! Love Chris' fun & facts, Martin's hair & the presenters' enthusiasm. Can't wait for Autumnwatch.

The ONLY programme I look forward to. I think you should re-name it "Nature Watch" and have a programme once a week or once a month all year round, SURELY there's enough demand for a regular slot for a programme like this?? As always the 3 presenters are perfect, Chris is a revelation, we loved Bill of course, but Chris is a breath of fresh air. Also of course, a special mention for all those that make it happen, crew, cameras etc etc, stars one and all. GUTTED it's over so soon. Roll on Autumn!

Love the show although the poo references could be a little less, even though they are very entertaining. Martin - you rock - especially with the new shorn locks! A fascinating look into our wildlife and some fantastic footage and guests throughout the series. Long may it continue - looking forward to Autumn watch.

I have enjoyed this series of Springwatch more than any other - fantastic! Only one thing... why does Liz wear a yellow safety helmet at all times when in open countryside? I can only assume that there is a logical reason for this.

I think the Oystercatcher is placing stones on her wings because she wants to weigh down her wings more to provide more warmth for the eggs as they are due to hatch!! Possible! We have loved the shows, very entertaining and informative and the presenters are brilliant!

Please stop using the term 'fledge' to mean ' leaving the nest'. 'Fledge' means ' to acquire feathers'.

I recently heard someone from the BBC Trust saying it 'was listening' but you are continuing to make it difficult to hear, or indeed want to go on watching, because of the intrusive music. If you go into the countryside you listen - to the country sounds or sometimes the silence. Lovely.

When the girl from Buglife came onto Springwatch this evening the bang bang music completely spoilt her piece. Shame. It's happening on almost all programmes and RUINS them. It's particularly annoying when you can faintly hear natural noise in the background

I have thoroughly enjoyed this year's Springwatch programmes apart from one small thing, "Where is Simon King"? Let's hope he'll be back for Autumnwatch!!

I've enjoyed the series, but have one complaint..... We've seen birds, otters, birds, snakes, birds, moths, birds, toads, birds, and probably insects, birds, badgers, birds etc etc. What about fish? They've been spawning through the last few months but we didn't see anything about them. Nor did we hear that eel populations have been reduced to less than 10% of their 1980 levels due to commercial overfishing of the elvers that are then exported to the continent for food; or that cormorants and otters (after ill-advised and often illegal re-introductions) are decimating the fish populations of our rivers and lakes. Of course, birds and otters are cute and cuddly, whilst fish (when you are lucky enough to see them) are horrible and slimey. In the next series, can we have a more ballanced view please?

We've really enjoyed this year's Springwatch and have been out trying to spot nature for ourselves here in Cornwall. We've been watching our tadpoles in our garden change, too. I've especially enjoyed Chris's Manic Street Preacher song title references - inspired!

The subject matter is simply fantastic, so why do you need such gushing twits as presenters? Is a silly hairstyle compulsory?

I have really enjoyed Springwatch this year more than ever!! Wales is a beautiful place! Enhanced of course by the three musquateers!! My very favourites were the Little Owls! would have loved to see more of them! Keep up the good work. Hope we have a good summer but cant wait for Autumnwatch!!!

Springatch has been great BUT I agree with Fred499! Keep Kate but bring back Bill Oddie - Chris and Martin are a real pain!!!

Really enjoyed spring watch at Ynishir- wonderful landscapes and wildlife I will miss my usual 8pm chill out It's so relaxing to watch and helps me to forget the stresses of the day.- I hope to get involved with local RSPB as a result. thanks to everyone but a special mention for Iolo -I'm off to Skomer soon!

Springwatch in its early days was brilliant but has now deteriorated to an unbelievable low except for Iolo Williams, most of the rest was childish drivel, presented very poorly. Please restore it with Bill Oddie and Simon King back to its former brilliance again.

Springwatch this year was better than ever, something new every programme, well worth watching, congratulations to all the presenters and everyone behind the scenes.Liz Bonnings foxes were brilliant

I think this years show has been the best it has ever been my family and I have had a go at every quiz there has been to offer martin kate and chris are the best ever and i hope the beavers buzzards and foxes and all the other animals are haveing as much fun as i am.

Please don't dumb down this much loved programe,its supposed to be focused on nature,not on the presenters. Too much sillyness.

I've enjoyed most of this series, however I wish we saw more wildlife and less presenters. All 3 seemed to be hyper most of the time.



I know this is going to annoy a lot of people but I'm really glad that KH won't be in Autumnwatch this year.

Not the best of Summer weatherise but hardly affected the programme. Disappointed that no mention was made of the Glaslyn osprey nest in Snowdonia.

Absolutely love the program but Kate is very annoying with her deliberate speech. The guys do a great job though. I'm really disappointed that we didn't get the updates on the cuckoo which was of particular interest to us.

I was not able to watch the programmes but the live webcams have added immeasurably to my quality of life. Watching all the drama, in all the weather, with all the sounds... just beautiful. Thank you.

Fantastic series, just as I was expecting. It's really great to see all these places of natural beauty in reserves etc, but maybe some people don't have the time or resources to travel to them. It would be nice to show a bit more of what people can do in their own gardens or little patch of green area on an estate near to where they live, so you know what is going on naturewise in your immediate surrounding.

Ideas... Nightwatch back... it's gone for many years and I've reeaaaalllly enjoyed it, please put it back... also, why was Simon not there??? and now Kate not on autumn eihter??? Not good... I love unsprung... pity that Chris won't wave or dance before camera... loved the raven.. And for ideas.. put less in it... it is soooo rushed.... to much in it,.. subject. lets go to.. subject lets go to... go back to basics...!!! I would love to see bluetits and greattits nests again.. What was wrong with that?? flycatcher.. wren... maybe next year? and I loved(!!) the buzzard and Herron.......and most of all WHEN IS BILL COMING BACK???? they were a golden duo.... never break a winning team..... miss ya Bill...they where equal, Chris really wants to be nr one....

Easily the best Springwatch series ever. The variety/number of species and habitats featured was second to none and the presenting was superb (comments to the contrary have missed some very important points). Bill was great (still is) - but the more recent set-up is more engaging for viewers of all ages. It's imperative that younger viewers gain inspiration from nature and ultimately get involved. The mix of science, nature and frivolity, combined with the superb camera-work, made this Springwatch superb entertainment as well as an education. Really difficult to fault anything this series. The land-fill stuff from Liz was a real eye-opener and Iolo's presentation of - and unbridled passion for - Skomer was brilliant. I really think you've mastered the formula - and Ynys-hir is an amazing location. Well done to all involved - missing it already.

So sad this year's series of Springwatch is over- looked forward to it so much and always a sense of loss when it stops.

Enjoyed all the birds particularly- sorry Chris not the snakes so much! A little disappointed my favourite blue tits were not on much- the same happened in my garden (I live in France), they didn't brood in our nesting boxes unlike other years andyet they came to the feeders all winter.

Love the programme but Kate is very annoying with her deliberate speech. The guys are much more natural and do a great job. I was very disappointed that we didn't get a quick weekly update on the cuckoos and I can't find anything about them on the website despite being told on the programme that we could get the updates from the website ...... where is it?????

Brilliant. I love it. I mean, I always do, but the Essex Landfill really opened my eyes - there's wildlife there that you wouldn't ever expect! Plus all of the different nestlings and animals were amazing to see, and to top it all of, it's hilarious, and I love how no one takes it too seriously. Amazing show. Thanks!

What a brilliant programme!! We absolutely loved the series and we are gutted that it has finished!! My nine year old son has been glued to it every night and has pleaded to forgo stories so he can watch the whole programme. Don't know what we will do until Autumnwatch. Thanks to all the crew and presenters.

I am sad its all over!! Pity we couldn't see the owl's fledge and the oystercatchers chicks. Any chance of keeping us posted? Maybe a summerwatch special in August/September?

Thoroughly enjoyed this years programmes. Liz from Essex was delightful and I really liked the birds of Skomer. It reminded me of the time I spent there 30 years ago where I watched and listened to the shearwaters at night as they returned to their burrows and saw for the first time a peregrine stooping after puffins. An amazing island which, at that time, didn't have any running water in the visitor huts so we collected all our drinking, cooking and washing water from a banked spring. I recall the warden telling us to dip the bucket in gently so as not to upset the newts which lived in it; but he warned us that if the newts weren't present we shoudn't use the water as they were an indicator of the purity of it. A magical island.

I have been watching 2 pairs of Turtledoves around Old Catton Norfolk NR6 7JS this week. They do everything together. Sit on roof tops and hoot for hours, almost annoying Then they fly to trees. They are totally buff coloured without the mottling on the wings that you showed on your programme tonight. 16 June 2011.

Another fabulous series, Ynys-hir has been such a wildlife rich site and am really glad that you are back there for Autumnwatch. Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved it has been a real joy to watch.

As the seasons now seem to be merging I think that the programme should be on a lot more during the year (Yearwatch!) with a few weeks off for the team here and there!

Going to miss it all! How about up-dates in summer or a mini-series. Thanks to all the team.

Very clever 'It's not unusual' montage by the way!

I've only watched sporadically this year because it has gone back to a tiresomely, patronisingly jokey, 'told to the children' style that for a while it seemed to have abandoned. It's a shame, when there's so much fascinating material and brilliant photography and observation, that you have to lard it with all that dreadful, artificial and relentless jollity -

If only the producers would allow you to behave naturally as the highly knowledgeable and very sympathetic people you really are, the programme would be 100% more satisfying to watch. I very much miss presenters like Simon King and Gordon Buchanan, who were able to be both very interesting and often funny and warm, but in a natural way, without making idiots of themselves. I'm sure children too would have enjoyed watching them as much or more, because they never self-consciously played down to the audience or tried too hard to be entertaining. So please lean hard on your producers to let you be yourselves and rescue the programme from the forced, unfunny, unskillful "comedy" that is out of place and that none of you should have to subject yourselves to providing.

BBC’s Springwatch is a programme that exemplifies the very best of British nature and of British technical excellence in the understanding of nature itself, outstanding camera work, production & sound engineering – as well as all of the other support that sits behind a programme such as this, and who are those faceless individuals thanked by the presenters when they collect their award. What a shame that it has been found necessary to allow Springwatch to become a platform for “celeb-style” facile presentation that betrays the excellence of the people who have really produced some of the most interesting and most pure programming for years. The real stars of nature do not need any commentary at all – unless it can be in the hushed and compelling tones of someone such as Attenborough: and who, I suspect, would never consider himself as anything other as the support act to the stars of the show. For the quality end of broadcasting this sets a dangerously low water mark.

Completely loved this series, infact they get better and better each year. Liz was fantastic as the new element to the formula, she is great at presenting as well as very knowledgable (and my husband has found some eye candy!). Chris and Martin's double act in Isle of Man was also entertaining but the main stars of the show are as always the wildlife and great to see an ever increasing variety of species and some old favourites..lets face it we loved all of it really! Shall look forward, as always to Autumnwatch too.

Great series. Very watchable. Marvellous camera work. Good team. BUT please CUT OUT the background music!!!! It ruined several clips for me. You even played music over some birdsong - on a programme like this. Ridiculous!

Am I the only person who absolutely despises Bill Oddie? I can't stand him. He's unprofessional, he has no sense of humour whatsoever, he always talked over Kate, he was stroppy...I could go on. Chris and Martin are a breath of fresh air and the camaraderie of the presenters is just brilliant. It makes the show. Oddie isn't a patch on Chris.

Springwatch was one of the highlights of the day in which all the family got together to watch. Our 5 and a half year old daughter was upset when she realised that this was the final episode and cried at the end. We asked her what she liked best. She said ''All of it including the music at the beginning and the end." We thank eveybody involved in the show for creating an enjoyable show for all ages. Our daughter asked if you could produce a summer and winter watch.

I am 78 years old and live alone and when your superb Springwatch comes to an end I feel I have lost a friend. Thank you SO much, it's wonderful to know that my 'friend' will be back in the autumn!

Great season as always but why the need for the third main presenter? This has allowed the presenters to waste time with frivolous bantering instead of showing the action. Meanwhile, while the trio are snug in their hut, the delightful Liz is foraging alone dressed as Bob the builder. Superb!

Wow I so enjoyed Spring Watch you constantly had me in stitches and I enjoyed all of your features love the Baby Owls so cute and the natter jack toads brilliant and of course the lovely fox's I was on beachy head once on holiday and i fed a very skinny Vixen a whole packet of biscuits she had obviously just had cubs i got some amazing photo's she ate straight out of my hand was an amazing experience i will never forget Sooooo looking forward to Autumn watch going to miss Kate though!

Why don't you come to South West Scotland Dumfriesshire its beautiful and lots of Deer here and lots of different wildlife I have 6 Swallows nests around my house right now wonderful you get sea birds and country birds all mixed in together its a very blessed area for Wildlife Look forward to seeing you here xx

I haven't seen Dutch people comment here, but I'm probably one of many who have enjoyed Springwatch to the full! What a treat it is. I ate late every night Springwatch was on, but it didn't matter because I was feeding on the dazzling footage, the knowledge, the beautiful English language, the wit of the presenters (!) and the perfect production of it all. We don't have a program like this in The Netherlands. We do have the webcams in spring, though, but not a tv show around it. Unlike yours, our webcams ARE STILL RUNNING. Watch the young of the little owl, stork, kingfisher, nuthatch, purple heron, peregrine, swallow and maybe you can even see eagle owlets. From a an absolute winning formula at it's inception, year on year unfortunately this show has nosedived in quality. I'm all for madcap but save it for Saturday night TV or change the name - this is about as far removed from natural history TV as you can get whilst still showing wildlife. The BBC Natural History Unit has spent decades building up a global leading reputation in this field just to have it's reputation trashed by this sorry excuse. The second MHG got in front of the camera with his patronising CBeebies presentation style it all went pear. Passing him off as some kind of wildlife expert is laughable, he knows less than the RSPB president which is zero. Kate Humble, who Bill Oddie kept in check, has turned into some kind of grinning hyper teenager and the pair of them hang on every word of Chris 'Please let me show everyone how clever I am' Packham. Looking forward to 'Presenterwatch' again in the Autumn so I can sit and watch the further rapid demise of the BBC NHU.

There are several things that would like to comment on:

1. With that intense density of foxes at Pitsea, I am surprised no-ne asked what would happen to the foxes when the site was full and reinstated and grassed over. There would not then be the food to scavenge...a possible problem for the future selfare of the foxes?

2. I was terribly frustrated that we could not hear the call of the turtle doves because of the 'mood' music. With such a rare bird it seemed to me that it would have been a really good idea tio be able to listen to it rather than have the pan pipes of whatever they were. That really spoilt that part of the programme for me...the photographs of those birds were wonderful. We simply did not need that intermittent music.

A few years ago I went to Ishuaia in the southernmost point of Argentina, to a nature reserve there...and I was actaully throughly shocked by the devastation to the land caused by the beavers - on a mighty big scale. Having always been rather keen on reinstatement, this made me think that it was possibly not a good idea in SAcotland

A lovely programme otherwise.

Chris Packham is a genius, and him and Martin are hilarious together. They are not just informative but very funny too, had me laughing out loud so many times. I especially liked Chris's reference to the film 'Snakes on a Plane', when he placed that little aeroplane on the compost heap that the snakes were nesting in........GENIUS

Apologies, the first time I tried to post a comment this evening it seemed to have hung on "loading", so I close the page and tried again. It seemed to be hanging again for about 10 minutes, and meanwhile I realised that my original comment had in fact been succesafully posted, at 21.25. However the second one was still hanging on 'loading' and I could not delete it. After closing and reopenng the page I find that it too was succesfully posted at 21.43 and is still awaitng moderation so please cancel it as it is virtually identical with the first. Firstly, congratulations and a big thank you to all the team, both presenters and production staff! Its been another outstanding series! I can't say its the best ever because for me personally the best ever series was back in 2007 on the farm in Devon - now that was fantastic!



Ynys hir is a great place though and the webcams have been great! one complaint I have though is that as I work all day all my webcam viewing is done at night and this years night viewing has been disappointing with the barn owls really the only highlight. Bring back river cam and the bat detector we had at Pensthorpe!



My favourite part of this year was Iolo Williams week on Skomer, Iolo is fantastic and a truly spectacular location to be in! Charlie's week was ok but there is so much more to Knapdale it would have been nice to see what else the area has to offer other than just Beavers! I'm afraid I didn't think much of the rubbish tip as a choice of location, just a few foxes and Herring Gulls, seen too much of that.



Ideas for next year? Well more of the same really, but please try and concentrate more on the wildlife, particularly those featured on the webcams which i feel gets ignored half the time these days and secondly good locations for the outside broadcasts. Skomer was great because it showed us up close some species that most people don't get to see very often.



Keep up the good work and see you all in the Autumn!

Glued to the webcams - will miss the daily bird calls, the marsh - and most importantly the results of the oystercatchers eggs. How can we get info on their progress?

Also I forgot to say please do unsprung more often!!

Watching it here in Ireland was fantastic. We will miss the program each evening, but we look forward to Autumn Watch. Thank you to all the team.

I thought it was an excellent series this year, very entertaining and informative at the same time.

Personally, I loved Iolo Williams on Skomer, and Liz at the landfill, they were very informative.

I am already looking forward to Autumnwatch and hope that the format will be the same as before with more unsprung, (If you can bring back Liz for that, it would be even more of a bonus)

How many sleeps to Autumn Watch?



Cant wait!

i thought it was very good but it could have been abit earlyer in spring and instead of four days a week for three weeks it could have been two days a week for six weeks maybe you will try that for autumn watch or next years spring watch

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Loved the variety of bird species this time, not just the usual suspects. Packham is superb in bringing the science to the fore. The three guest presenters were superb and the landfill ecology segment was inspired. Please, please, please can we have more of Liz Bonnin, not just knowledgeable but also a great presenter. Perhaps she could fill Kate's shoes in Autumnwatch?

Really sad the series is over until the Autumn, like other comments I do wish there was a live program once a week all year round with extra shows at big parts of the year like Spring and Autumn... I am also sad to hear some of the comments criticising the presenters. This is a unique show with unique and highly impressive presenters who deal with massive amounts of pressure whilst delivering an informative and high quality LIVE wildlife show. I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I honestly don't think this show would be half of what it is without Chris, Kate, Mark (and everyone else over the years). These people have given their lives to wildlife study and I for one don't mind a bit of hilarity and happiness along the way. I love the David Attenborough approach, the quiet, detailed delivery however to keep things fresh and to intrigue children into learning about nature I think there is also a place for Springwatch and its presentation methods. Well done to everyone involved. I am already missing you!

Please BBC blow the dust of one of the old series and compare with this years. Springwatch normallly keeps me glued to the screen for start to finish. This year the geekyness and roadtrips just made me tune out. The competition between the presenters who could have the beste lines and talk the most..... Fortunately the good parts always bring the smile back. It's not a kids show so next show remember who's in the audience.

Wow I so enjoyed Spring Watch you constantly had me in stitches and I enjoyed all of your features love the Baby Owls so cute and the natter jack toads brilliant and of course the lovely fox's I was on beachy head once on holiday and i fed a very skinny Vixen a whole packet of biscuits she had obviously just had cubs i got some amazing photo's she ate straight out of my hand was an amazing experience i will never forget Sooooo looking forward to Autumn watch going to miss Kate though!

Why don't you come to South West Scotland Dumfriesshire its beautiful and lots of Deer here and lots of different wildlife I have 6 Swallows nests around my house right now wonderful you get sea birds and country birds all mixed in together its a very blessed area for Wildlife Look forward to seeing you here xx

I think Springwatch is just a brilliant programme with very good presentation, only downside for me is it doesn't last long enoough, I would love at least for the webcams to stay on until all the babies had fledged, will miss you all, especially the owls, can't wait till Autumn

My five year old daughter Anna and I have watched every night and are now worried about the Springwatch void! We have so enjoyed all the webcams, keeping an eye on things over the weekends, feeling part of the event. She particularly enjoyed the daft goings on of Chris and Martin, especially their roadtrips! Can't wait for Aumtumn, see you all again then!

As ever, the series was excellent, would really like to see more of Iolo Williams, possibly as a replacement for Simon. The knowledge Iolo has and the way in which he passes the knowledge on is really infectious, and of course regular presenters Kate, Chris and Martin were on top from as ever.

A massive thank you to EVERYONE involved in bringing this great show to our screens, looking forward to Autumnwach now.

There are several things that would like to comment on:

1. With that intense density of foxes at Pitsea, I am surprised no-ne asked what would happen to the foxes when the site was full and reinstated and grassed over. There would not then be the food to scavenge...a possible problem for the future selfare of the foxes?

2. I was terribly frustrated that we could not hear the call of the turtle doves because of the 'mood' music. With such a rare bird it seemed to me that it would have been a really good idea tio be able to listen to it rather than have the pan pipes of whatever they were. That really spoilt that part of the programme for me...the photographs of those birds were wonderful. We simply did not need that intermittent music.

A few years ago I went to Ishuaia in the southernmost point of Argentina, to a nature reserve there...and I was actaully throughly shocked by the devastation to the land caused by the beavers - on a mighty big scale. Having always been rather keen on reinstatement, this made me think that it was possibly not a good idea in Scotland at all...especially in areas adjacent to any agriculture.

Oh dear not so good this year for me, read the comments and a bit divided. So what was the problem, too much music, too much messing around, far too much CP, KH too much caffine, MHG stay on unsprung. Go back to 2 presenters, show more of the wildlife, bring back Simon and Gorden, use Iolo more and please get rid of the inuendo. You do not need it, if you cannot make your point without it then your not very good at your job. Do you get it from the above mentioned SK, GB or IW, NO. Liz Bonnin in that hide late at night with the gentleman not one inuendo.

The people who sit up for most of the night watching what goes on need to have their stories told. The nest cams, show more of them. Next time have a roving reporter get him/her to go to viewers gardens. One more thing for next year, many children watch Springwatch so give a camcorder to a child and let him/her loose or send him/her off for a childs eye view of wildlife. Bit of a rant there folks sorry but please producers and presenters listen.

Oh dear, I called Martin, Mark in my comment just now. I don't suppose Mr HG reads these blogs but I must apologise for this error! Love Martin too, can't believe the mistake!!!

Springwatch this year has been excellent. Everyone concerned deserves enormous thanks. I have particularly enjoyed the webcams and watched them avidly each day and followed the development of the birds and animals. However , I am bitterly disappointed that they have been switched off, Could you not have allowed us to see all the birds fledge as we will now never know what happened to them.

Enjoyed it, the dynamics between the three musketeers is excellent. Please ensure that the miserable bearded know-all does not return.
