Guess what bird's on my cap

I noticed you badge. I want to share with you something else, now you are in Dorset, where I live.

Yesterday I have been for a walk at Dancing Ledge (on the Dorset Coast , not very far from where you are now) and I have been watching Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots and Shags for a few hours. Of course I have the wrong lens with me so my photos are not great, but it made my day to see them. It was first time for me to see puffins in England.

I thought last nights badge was a Hobby

I was wearing the same pin badge last night! A lovely coincidence!

Ooooh I do love a bird challenge! Ask me anything about British birds and 9 times out of 10 I can give you an answer. Bring it on!

I thought it was a hobby.

I am going to say last nights badge was of a hobby because simon said it was one of his favourite birds and it was definatly a falcon of some sort.

It's an RSPB Hobby pinbadge (I know cos I sell them! ;0)

Tonight's was too small to tell this ealrly. Could have been a song thrush or fieldfare ??

Maybe a Redwing. The sun is reflecting off the badge which doesn't help!

The tail didn't look long enough to be a Dartford Warbler.

I didn't actually know dartfords were UK residents, in Holland we call them Provencal Warbler, it's a rarity over here!

I think that Thursdays badge was a Dorset warbler but this is just a guess and they were shown on the show and it look similar

Thank you Simon, yes I noticed the hobby badge in your cap, you have saved me asking the question "what was it", as it was on the night you visited Buck House to receive your award ( very deserving as well ) was going to ask if the Queen had also presented you with this!!!

i thought Thursdays was a Dartford Warbler too.

Recently I checked out a fox earth to see if it was active with a view to taking some photographs. It was active as confirmed by the flattened grass, pieces of wing, feathers and bones scattered outside the entrance hole plus the acrid smell, but I was disturbed to see that amongst this were "fresh tufts of badger hair!!" Has anyone seen this before? Does it mean that the foxes have killed and taken down a badger cub, or possibly a badger road kill as food?

Long wait, but easily a peregrine!

I thought Peregrine for Simons hat,talking of which when I watched last nights amazing footage of Ed Drewitt & Martin H.Games 'ringing' young Peregrines, did anyone notice how many 'leg rings'there were actually in the nest ? no one on the programme mentioned it ! I think it's a Grey Heron, the white could be light reflecting off the badge. Could be wrong but it looks like a Heron.

I think its bill is too smaal for anheron/great white.

Therefore, little egret

...well, that's too small, and a heron. But still little egret...

The peak is not dark enough for a little egret..

@JS, you've got to have a 2 mtre flatscreen to see that ! :-)

I have both the Grey Heron and Little Egret RSPB badges, and believe it to be the heron. The badge has a longer neck where the egret has it's neck drawn down.



I wonder if Simon has the Black Winged Stilt badge?

Today's looks like a raptor. Might be an osprey.

Hmm, just saw a glimpse of reddish brown as I posted that last comment. Don't think it's a Red Kite coz I've got the Red Kite badge and it's a different shape. Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure of it.

Is it a Kestrel on Simon's hat - it looks like it is in a hovering position?

Its wings are too round and broad for a falcon, and a buzzard hovers too.

Not sure what the last badge was that you wore on the show Simon.



But here about 12 miles from Shapwick Heath and very close to the River Perrot, I have seen a large white bird with black wing tips, flying in buzzard style, quite high. I am sure it is not a buzzard as it seems too big, although I know we do get them overhead someimes. It puts the fear of God into the many sparrows that come to the feeder in my garden! I was wondering if it could be a hen harrier. I have looked on here and in my bird books, and it seems to be the only bird that is so light coloured from beneath. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a gull flying high, but that would not cause the sparrows to go quiet. I would be interested to know what you think.

The only badge in my collection (which currently stands at over 80) to match the shape of Simon's badge is snowy owl in flight, but I'm sure his looked to be reddish brown in places. I suppose that the outlines on the snowy owl badge are darker so I'll say it's snowy owl but with no real confidence.

It's been great to see the team down in Dorset, and it's amazing that they went to abbotsbury swannery! My family are moving down to that exact area once I go off to uni and I've visited abbotsbury before - it's gorgeous. Now I can't wait to get exploring all the other hidden places of dorset! Thanks sw team!
