Jacqui Smith's apology

An inquiry by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, John Lyon, upheld two complaints against Jacqui Smith - that she'd wrongly designated her sister's London property as her main home and that she'd claimed for pay-per-view adult films on her second homes allowance.

The Commissioner, in a report published in October 2009 by the Commons Standards Committee, said that "her main home, in the sense that most people understand the term, was the house that she shared with her family".

But the former Home Secretary was not asked to repay any of the money she'd claimed under the second home allowance.

Jacqui Smith herself, in a personal statement to the Commons, told MPs that she apologised "unreservedly" for claiming for the pay-per-view films.

As for the second home, she said she was pleased it was recognised that the London house "was indeed a home".

But, in what was seen by many MPs as a rather grudging apology, she added: "I accept the committee's conclusion and I therefore apologise to the House."

Jacqui Smith had a majority of less than 3,000 at the 2005 general election and this won't have helped her chances of holding what is a marginal seat.
