The next big thing?

We’re delighted to announce a stellar panel of judges for our Student Innovation Award:
  • Jonathan Baker, head of the BBC College of Journalism and currently acting head of BBC Newsgathering
  • Olivia Solon, associate editor of Wired.co.uk at Conde Nast
  • Philippa Thomas, BBC News presenter and recently a Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard.

With the closing date for applications behind us, we’ve been sifting through an impressive collection of entries.

The Award, open to journalism students at UK universities or on other accredited courses, is now in its second year, and there’s no sign of any slowing in the rate of innovation displayed by the entries we’ve received.

Another brilliant idea

The Award has always stressed that it’s given for the quality of the journalism in a project as much as for any techie innovations. This year the range of subjects, from the scientific to detailed studies of foreign countries, the history of a European conflict and a newsy approach to contemporary British politics, shows that journalism students have not lost sight of the importance of content, whatever the chosen medium.

The winner will be announced at BBC College of Journalism conference in London on 11 December. Further details will be posted here shortly.
