For some reason Tom's story hits the hardest with his "Teachers Pet" picture his desire for an education the fact he is aware that he lacks this part of growing up.

I have pictures of Lenora Crichlow & Zooey Deschanel on my wall. I think Tom's fantasy is much more realistic!!

hm...Tom wants old-man-shoes?

Mostly either family (especially dads), dogs, school/uni, friends and couples/women. Look at the shelf below - toy soldiers and train-set pieces, probably left over from Mitchell's occupancy. Poor Tom, could he do a fast-track-to-uni course? Then again, what would his subject be? Maybe History if he got Hal to help, but Hal was stoned on blood for a lot of the past 500 years...

I wonder what birthdays in the Pink House and the Barbershop Trio Flat were like? Too much tea and enough food to burst an elephant from Annie (and George to some extent, to make sure everything was perfect) in the Pink House, so even Mitchell's appetite (which could handle a 12" Mess of Meats and a whole box of Golden Grahams - all carb-heavy and very filling) would be challenged; Hal wouldn't enjoy the disruption to his routine (or the flashbacks to his previous birthdays, when he mostly got drunk and went out for a massacre and a kebab with his cronies) but maybe he got a few extra dominoes each year or something.

He wants a puppy? There was a kennell in the garden.

Romance, family and holidays...overall a normal life...the whole suburbian white-picketfence-lifestyle...not very likely, poor Tom

What is the one picture that is still destroyed it's still on the side waiting to be restored.

Interesting whats on the fireplace though, the box and tunnel shaped blocks and the toy train. The two groups of soldiers at war, uniforms from different eras.



It also looks like he got some chocolate after all!

I think the train and soldier sets are probably relics from Mitchell's stay in that room.

Yeah I think Tom wants to be Don Draper! Some kind of power couple in the 'burbs with 2 kids and a golden retriever -my heart beaks for him! Hopefully he'll settle down into the little HH family, I'm pretty sure he's fallen into big brother role for Eve, Hal's the father figure (he's old enough!)

I thought it was so cute when Hal started putting Tom's pictures back on the wall after Tom had ripped them off. And when Tom started teasing him about "that one's not straight". *lol* I don't think it's even physically possible for Hal to NOT put it up straight. ;)



But it showed how much Hal had started caring for him in his own way, as well as that he told Annie about Tom's birthday. Aawww, I just love those two.

the first and fourth and eight episode of season 3 are supposedly showing werewolves fighting in a cage in a derelict swimming pool where vamps hold bet and certainly the mcnair prequel with herrick showed the same pool though lookinhg a tad perkier



we know tom is planning to build a swimming pool- where in the HH backgarden???? with plenty of rubber tubbing!!



my guess is that he is cunningly planting plenty of rubber tubes inside the said cage when the vamps are not there because they have no more werewolves to play with and he plans some big action at one point making them believe they can have anothert 'dog' fight , tom can be ready to play kamikaze , he could...

I would like to lodge a complaint; the toasts were no cut precisely at an angle of 90 degrees plus the butter rectangle shape left somewhat to be desired as for the tea water it was not properly hot. warm yes, hot not. Finally there was no organic jam and my newspaper had not been ironed.

In my opinion Tom needs the rubber tubes for the muriatic acid, because muriatic acid doesn´t corrode rubber. I ask myself if Cutler will find out about Toms bombing plans...it would be a nice puzzle piece in his anti-ww campaign. I imagine a police search, where they find the material and Tom is arrested for suspicion of terrorism. Terroristic WWs would definitely be scary for humans. Or even worse, Cutler finds out about his plans, evacuates the vampire headquater, Tom blows it up (the police only finds the bodys of the focus group or other vampire victims) and Cutlers Anti-WW campaign becomes really successful.

his name is Hal/ Harry- hence Henry

I think I would have liked this latest ep more if Kirby had not been quite so slimy and creepy from the beginning. If there had've been some time when he seemed nice and we actually wondered if Nina might have sent him, I think it would have made it all the more creepy when we found out what he was really like. It would also have made his manipulation of our trio more believable.

I would like someone (preferably Annie) to ask Hal why he wanted to stop killing in the first place, and what keeps him motivated now when it is obviously so difficult. He's given hints and we can make guesses, but I would like to hear it in his own words. His motivations are still not very clear to me (and yes that is a big part of the appeal - his potential danger, so I can see why we haven't had this). I think Annie should have asked him this before letting him in the house, but then, she is Annie!

Hi re: comments 40 & 56 and Hals nationality.



Although Hal, Harry & Henry would definately suggest English-ness in the Hal and Leo prequel I think Hal refers to The Battle of Orsha (spelling ??!!) and being on the end of a lance. Had a quick search and this battle is more of a Russian, Polish Lithianian eastern european event. So although the name would suggest he's english surely that would be a pre vampire battle he fought as a human in his homeland. Unless of course he was an english mercenery !!!

60- I think it is more likely that Hal was born in England, have a really tough childhood, with no family left he became a sailor (possibly in the Royal Navy or Merchant Navy) and arrived to the port of Gdansk, got involved (possibly recruited) to fight for the Polish Army and end up dead in the massive battle of Orsha in Belarus. After that, I think he took the opportunity to educate himself and become the gentleman he is now!!

Given what little we know of Hal's background I'd agree with the mercenary assessment. He would have fought for anyone... provided they give him a red shield of course. (From what I can gather, though might be wrong, the coats of arms of all three parties in the Battle Of Orsha were red.)

it seems quite a few battles were fought quite near

including during napoleon times - town destroyed and burnt down and world war two naturally

if Hal has 'hunted' near it for a good many centuries, he will have seen quite a few unpleasant sides of humanity, the death camps built near and around Otcha coming to mind

What puzzles me is Annie being tired. She's said it a couple of times. Yet she doesn't sleep so it's not sleepy sort-of-tired and she doesn't have a body so it's not weary sort-of-tired. So is she empathising with mothers everywhere and feeling tired because that's what mothers are? Like a huge 'mothers are exhausted' aura?

This is so sweet I loved everything about ep 4 and the bit with tom and the birthday party was sooo sweet!! I think this wall shows how vunerable tom is I think we often forgot how little experience of the real world he has!

i have re-watched the the episodes and may be i am analysing things a bit too much but there seems to be a theme along the lines of how womens lives have changed over the years the abuse that they have suffered how men have treated them how this is over come how the world has changed for them ect ect .How women have been depicted in literature ect ect

womens rights ect ect this has in turn changed the world the womens revolution may be not the right words but its hard for me to explain women still find it hard if they want the whole package may be ??? some women dont want the whole package feminism and not stereotyping people has changed the world Toms wall seems like like he wants the whole package very modern in one way but tom has respect for old values at the same time so he want a perfect balance he has not had the stereotype up bringing but that doest mean he do any worse than any one that had .but finding the balance may be hard we cant always have what we want sometimes we have to compromise and some times we compromise on the wrong things ok I have not explained my self very well but eve did bite the apple of the tree of life and joan of arc was born around the same time as Hal Changing of the family structure how the world has changed and how it has changed our lives and how it has changed the roles of men and women and whether there is equality just something to think about

Nadia, it could be just emotional tiredness. She's keeping the house together, grieving the loss of her friends, trying to take care of Eve the best she can, cope with the knowledge that the Old Ones are on their (his?) way, dealing with Hal and his quirks, Tom and his quirks and remain positive. I can imagine that is a lot to take on board.



Like the idea of Hal being an English mercenary, i hope we get more of an idea than just his prequel :)

Finally a closer look at Tom's wall!

I like the way Tom's character adds something new to BH. While the others have been wanting to get something they've lost back, Tom wants something he's never had. George also had the dream of a perfect family, but for him that was a way to get back to normal life, the way his life "should" have been.

In a way the others were trying to get back to what they saw as being human, while Tom is trying to learn to be what he sees as human.



By the way, I've been meaning to re-watch last episode, but can't bring myself to do it, because Kirby freaked me out too much. It was a really good episode, so I really want to re-watch it, but Kirby seriously gave me nightmares.

@79 plus the fact that with Tom and Hal disappearing off for the day and then when they are around fighting both verbally and physically it cant be easy!

79 - Not so sure about emotional tiredness.(Sorry, Just to confuse things I've now got to use the words emotion and tiredness to explain what I mean) I guess what I'm trying to say is that, whilst Annie can experience emotions, tiredness isn't an emotion. It's a physical thing. Even emotional tiredness manifests itself physically.

but grief is such an odd thing it is technically an emotion but it can manifest itself physically ie through tiredness.

73 and related. I thought Annies tiredness was a sign that Kirbys manipulations to isolate her and in the end "kill" her were working. That with all the fighting in the household and Tom an Hal leaving the house angry she was losing her link to the world.

84 - I agree for humans. But how can a ghost feel physically tired? Think I'm going with T&T and 0positiv on this one, but thanks for your input everyone.

On a similar but different subject sorry if its been discussed already but its been bugging me if vampires cant get ill then how can Hal have OCD which is after a mental illness??

88- I'm not sure if Hal actually has OCD. If you take a look at the diagnostic criteria the DSM IV requires for that I think he is not exactly OCD. It' s more like he's trying his best to keep occupied 24/7 (DSM IV: https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1934139-overview%29

May be this has to do with stereotyping Annie is a woman just using this as an example it could be a bloke too . Maybe her losing her link to this world was a way of showing us how one can lose there identity when we are not sure of the role we are supposed to have or could be the role someone thinks we should have and we dont want that role and who we really are it sometimes makes us invisible people only see what they want to see and sometimes cannot see past what they want to see and sometimes we only let people see only a small part of who we are and they dont see what we are about

Here is another Hal thought - Medication.



Hal as someone whose schedule is like 'Medication' to keep him sane, now his 'Therapy' has reached a level where he needs less in the way of 'Medication' but getting the doses right is still something he's working on.

Hope we get to know more about Culter, his vampire age and his maker (Hal?) Loving Tom, Hal and Annie. Would also like Hal and Annie (Hannie) get together but too much like repeat of Mitchell storyline, but there is a chemistery between them. Hope all the visitors to this site/blog have convinced bbc to comission another 2 series. Great work from Toby, all writer/directors, crew that we got to know during video blogs of series 1-3.

88- @dramalovely 'nother thought on vampires and illness: I guess it would depend on why they can't get sick if they could have psychiatric illnesses or not. If they've just got a really great immune system then they could still get depressions and other metnal disorders.

I agree with some of the other comments earlier re Tom, he may not be book or social smart, but mcnair thought him about surival. Building a swimming pool may just his excuse to collect chemicals to help protect Annie and Eve. What about the cellar in HH......

what i mean is sometimes things are over looked because Annie she comes across as strong and so we see before us a strong person and think she can cope so she can be overlooked it is a form of stereotyping a person because of what we see them to be not just that in this day and age we also presume a lot of things and we could come across as belittling a person especially because of equal rights ect so we need to find a balance

one could imagine vamps being human alterd by an alien virus which is modifying their human biolgy and make them look immortal

who knows on that alien planet , peeps live 5000ys as human earthling ys, yet die naturally

a vamp would have no knowldege of teh original infection and as no human would live 5000ys

by the time the vamp really start showing aging a good 1000-2000ys have elapsed...

Just wanted to comment in reply to @60 (and others) regarding Hal's past - I reckon he is English, and back then there were no traditonal armies and it was very easy for people to become mercenaries. I think in his prequel doesn't he mention 'running away' or such similar to battle? Which would suggest he's a mercenary. I don't think it was difficult back then to find yourself fighting in a foreign country - we know for example that as a young man Thomas Cromwell 'ran away' too and ended up fighting as a mercenary in Italy! Also I have been thinking about his 'jobs' he's had - cleaning up the streets etc. I'd imagine that all happened before he left and found himself a soldier, and then probably advanced up the ranks, became important [insert red shield quote here], became a Vampire and then left or carried on fighting for a bit?
