INTRODUCING... SYKES
In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions
This week Annie stumbles across the oldest ghost she's ever met - Sykes.
Sykes is a World War II veteran trying to help Annie dodge death and all its agents. Here's a sneak peek of the pair in action as Sykes teaches Annie to embrace her ghostly powers and learn to read auras.
I've been reading the auras of the blog team all morning. Seems to be saying they want a raise and more days off... Nope, must be doing it wrong. Back to work blog team.
Do you like the look of Sykes? And do you think he will be good or bad for Annie? Leave us your comments below...
And don't miss episode four this Sunday 9pm on BBC Three.

I hope you guys don't mind me giving my opinion. I enjoy discussing the show even though I think it's gone a bit wrong.. I guess I'm working through my disappointment and sense of loss by talking it out! Maybe it's mean to criticise it here.. Im not trying to stop people from liking it and enjoying it. I guess I just don't like being the only one who cant enjoy it anymore... and am surprised im the only one. And I guess I wish there were more like me because if the makers knew there were large numbers of 'dissatisfied customers' they might try to make more effort next time round.
anywho, here tis, all responses/thoughts (politely expressed, with my right to freedom of speech in mind) are welcome:
Okay, will try to respond to some of the arguments, although I didn't manage to read all of it, sorry.
Firstly, i dont mean to say plot is respected by the 'highest grossing films'. When I talk about 'success' I don't just mean 'watched by lots of people', I mean a mixture of box office success AND critical acclaim. Generally speaking, great movies are extremely well plotted. There are exceptions, fantastic anti-narrative films like 'Last Year in Marienbad' or 'Mullholland Drive' (though both have excellent plots of sorts, just not traditional, logical, linear ones), but most mainstream movies that do well both financially and critically, have good plots. A lot of high-grossing movies do now get by on pure spectacle, but most of them are, in my opinion, awful.
I didn't really mean to imply that plot is unimportant in TV shows... just that you can get away with some dodgy plotting if style, tone, and dialogue all remain good quality. And also that plot can't possibly be the lean, taut, perfectly symmetrical, ingeniously structured masterpiece that is aimed for in film-writing... because TV shows are just too extended in terms of time-line and too constricted in terms of production schedule to refine and plan in that much detail. They can still be DAMN GOOD if you've got people who know what they're writing about in extreme detail (see The Wire).. but tone/style is what matters most in the long run, in my opinion.
Also didn't mean to imply that tone is unimportant in film. A film with nothing more than a good plot may as well be a book or a radio show. Many a film has a good plot idea, but without stylish, intelligent, innovative execution, it cannot be great. I enjoy The Butterfly Effect's basic plot concept, but with better casting, directing, dialogue and cinematography, it could've become a sci-fi classic. To say plot is all that matters disregards 90% of the work that goes into film-making.
I havent seen series 2 of True Blood, and I don't want to get into a side-debate on it, but I thought series 1 was brilliantly executed. It's not for everyone, but it knows what it's doing, and it does it well. It may be 'OTT' in some ways, but i think its witty dialogue and satirical humour is clever and really fun. It's interesting someone mentioned the mystery plot being the only reason they watched.. I've watched series 1 twice, and the reason I went back was for the characters, the mood, the humour, the southern gothic 'vibe'..
Someone said it seemed as though my only problem with BH is that series 2 is 'different' to series 1. Yes and no. If a series returns so different from the previous season that it is essentially a 're-vamped' (excuse the pun), different show, then it is a bit of a betrayal to fans in my opinion. If it's good, I will keep watching, but it's a cheeky, slightly desperate move, generally made by people who are out of ideas for the original show they came up with.
Being Human hasn't quite gone that far... it's taken a step in a different direction, but has one foot planted where it began. Unfortunately it feels like it's trying to achieve something new while clinging to the old and not doing very well at either.
The humour just isn't as funny as last series. The 'real hustle' scene has been championed.. but to me it felt forced and out of place... 'I don't do marigolds' raised a chuckle but immediately reminded me of the superior 'Ikea' moment, and then they pushed it too far when he put ON the marigolds. The exaggerated tantrum was way off-tone - too sitcom.. If there'd been a later scene where George walked in and Mitchell was silently washing the dishes with the gloves on.. that would have been funny, in a subtle, real way. But they forced it..
The delivery of the 'comic' lines is pretty poor as well. Maybe the actors had less time to prepare, or the raised dramatic stakes (woops scuse pun!) made it tricky for them to gauge how to do the comedy scenes and remain true to their anguished characters. Or maybe it's just impossible to get right because the material's so weak... For whatever reason, all the actors are impressing me less now. Lenora seems really off to me (probably because her character is all over the place), Aidan's 'intensity' doesn't convince (he's - dare I say it? - a bit hammy), and Rusell, who used to be excellent, is now just okay.
The whole George-Kirsty-Hugh storyline seemed trite and awkward, weird and not funny. It was like a sit-com set-up. When I say I want humour, I mean the wry, witty lines that peppered the scripts of season 1. Literally, it was like a seasoning. Every scene was necessary to the plot and character development, but with humour thrown in. The Kirsty stuff was a weird, over-written subplot - all the detail about her and hugh bored me to death - that was clearly there to 'fill' Annie's portion of the episode and fulfil the humour quota. It didn't work. My Name is Earl but less funny (thats saying something!)
And exactly why Annie would be so distracted from the serious goings on in her two supposed friends' lives is still a bit of a mystery. It's like the writers need her to be distracted so that the three can be 'distanced' from one another... but they just lumped her with all the awkward comedy storylines, making her 'look the other way' to serve their own purposes rather than to serve her character's realistic needs. Making her show so much concern for this half-sketched 'Hugh' when George and Mitchell, her closest friends, are so obviously in more need, makes her look shallow, self-absorbed and ditzy. You could argue she got George out of his bed by roping him in to the matchmaking scheme, but to me it looked pretty insensitive, and the comedy dating scenario trivialised George's pain which had previously been depicted as intense and profound. It was the wrong kind of humour for what's going on plotwise - in my opinon, if the story is dark, the humour has to be dark too, otherwise they undermine one another. Looks like Annie might get a more believable distraction next week at least..
ummm.. what else.
It's just ... everything. Everything is weaker. The plotting is full of good, ambitious ideas, but the execution is unconvincing and uneven. Nothing flows like it did in S1.. does no-one else have that feeling?
The bit where the vampires sang rehab??? Come on. Again I can see the reasoning - young vampires without a leader retreat into chaotic, playground behaviour... but onscreen it was silly and killed the tension and believability of the scene. Plus good god am i sick of that song!
And I still maintain they are severely neglecting interaction between the main 3. Ok, they're keeping things from each other, growing apart, in bad moods. There would still be scenes in the house together... You could derive a lot of comedy, subtle comedy, from how things are cool/awkward between them all. Yes there was the 'house meeting', one, forced scene, where even the characters were intentionally making themselves be in the same room and interact with each other. But it was over the top, probably because the writers were trying to concentrate all the group-tension into one scene, rather than allowing a little more screentime to go into subtly depicting daily life in the house..
I miss Herrick - he was a clearly drawn villain with an obvious psychology - violent megalomaniac, yet he was unpredictable and genuinely intimidating. Daisy is interesting, the actress is good, but she's a bit pointless so far... Yeah, she's unstable, conflicted, impulsive, provocative, seems to thrive on chaos... but what's she doing there? so far there's no real reason for her to be so prominent in the plot. She's just there, on the sidelines, watching things 'burn', stirring a bit, acting bonkers.. Lauren 2.0 but with less relevance. She's not driving the plot at all. They introduced her and Ivan with such fanfare in ep 1, and now they're not doing anything. Actually, if she'd just turned up in ep 3, acting pretty much as she did, it would've been much more subtle. If she's not going to DO anything signiificant til later on, wouldn't it have been better to introduce her casually as a background character, and have her importance to the plot sneak up on the viewer?
To be honest, i think the webisodes kind of undermined things. It signposted all the 'big threats' in advance, to get everyone hyped up... so the mysterious threat of the unknown is deflated, and all they do is underwhelm...
Okay.. i'll stop going on and on now.
Hey, I'm still watching! Glutton for punishment me.

First to our new character Sykes: I'll be interested to find out why he didn't move on .don't think that he has been brought back by 'the agents' but that he's been around since whenever in WW2...I'm inclined to think he will assist Annie but that she will try to want to spend more time with him than he wants. Opening line shows that another 'agent' has been trying to get Annie throgh the door or to pass over in some way.
Bexter2001: a very articulate outline of your thoughts on contrasts between BH1 and BH 2...I don't know that I've got anymore to add other than what I repiled to you on previous blog. Elements that I agree with are that I would like the main 3 characters to be working more together on their 'issues' but then wouldn't that be a copy of BH1?...in some ways the 'pulling apart' was inevitable as George became the 'celeb' of the vampires, Annie gained confidence when she could be seen and Mitchell decided that he had to restore some order to the now chaotic vampire situation. I think that they will all 'find each other' again towards the end of this series and work together when they realise they all need to address the common threat of the crazy Prof.
I haven't found the humour so far in BH2 to be contrived...and actually, I'm particularly enjoying the more dramatic tone. Don't agree with you about the acting at all...if anything all 4 main characters have shown greater versatility and greater skill in their acting in this series...plus, all the additional characters introduced have been good in the quality of their acting. Daisy and Ivan are intriguing and I think we have yet to find out what the overall plan is for them in the grand scheme of things and whether or not they are influential in the story having to move away from Bristol.
Basically I'm not looking at each episode or the whole series with quite the analytical eye that I think you are Bex...I'm just enjoying the twists , the turns, and simply loving the series.

I really dont agree re the Hustle scene - it was so funny because their reaction was totally out of proportion - which was based in their characters - and also tied back to the positions the two men are in - so a subtle day-in-the-house version wouldnt have worked the same - the marigolds were part of that - just losing it big time - as you do! And I disagree re the acting - Aidan as bad vamp can look a bit melodramatic - it's a fine line when youre dealing with something as unreal as vampires? but the comic acting of all three is much better/more subtle than in S1 - (eg the lift scene? teh Annie/George bedroom scene, the pub scene with Hugh, plus the hustle scene?) and some of their more serious scenes together show some really intelligent acting (eg Mitchell and Nina at end of ep2, Mitchell and Russell in kitchen in ep3; Mitchell and Nina again in ep1)
I agree with your view on True Blood - but as Toby said it's completely different - more a wider community thing - BH has its own character - the mix of everyday and supernatural can mean some odd switches of tone and they havent got every single scene right - but overall it's still the same show - and getting better as S2 goes on??

(Am told he is a good actor so will reserve the right to change my opinions after ep4)
Secondly, blimey that's a bit of a meaty post there bexter2001! Some very valid points raised, but a few that were just "nit-picking" in my personal opinion either. One can pick holes in practically anything if they have the knowledge to do so - some of the hospital scenes in BH wouldn't happen like that in real life, which would mean the storylines couldn't happen in the way that they do, but TV is TV so I will let them go! I mean like the "Rehab" bit you mentioned - just to inject a little bit of comic relief into the scene, I don't have any issue with it. But as I said thats just my personal opinion and we all have a right to one, a bit of difference between all of our thoughts is what makes them interesting right?
Nothing personal at all you understand, just the point I am trying to make is that while all of your points are well thought out and justified, I think we just need to let a few things "slide" - otherwise I'd be going mental with all the little things done wrong at the hospital!
Woah sorry that turned into a bit of a rant, my apologies bexter2001 do hope you understand what I mean - nothing personal there at all!

Bexter- you did raise some very good points that got me thinking for a while but i'm sorry (and this is nothing personal :)) but i didn't really agree with some of the things that you said. I think that maybe you're reading a bit too much into it. I've watched things like Merlin and Tourchwood and been able to enjoy them becuase I don't "over-read it"- if you see what I mean. In programmes, and even films, about things supernatural or magical it's easy to sit back and go "yeah right!"- but to be honest i don't see the fun in that. Being Human is about bringing supernatural prospects into everyday life and I think that Toby and all the writers, cast members and crew do it very well. I think that acting is brilliant- i know at times it may seem flamboyant but that's just the characters, not the actors.
Sorry and I hope that that didn't sound at all rude or anything like that- just giving my opinion on your post. :) Thank you :D

Wow - Bexter your post was very long, and you did make some very valid points. I too thought some of the comedy was a bit 'forced' and too obvious to what it used to be, particularly in Ep 3 with the Real Hustle seen, and yes the 'Rehab' song made me cringe too.
However, I do still love the series and am enjoying the drama more - there's much more going on, and more twists and turns, and perhaps we just accept that BH can't do absolutely everything successfully all at once.

I think i've ridden out the storm of my disappointment and can now settle into a routine of letting the things that i think are a bit off 'slide' as BHfan suggests. I plan to keep watching so there's no point letting the changes annoy me any more.
I totally get what you guys mean about suspension of disbelief in an alternate world where supernatural creatures exist.. i just felt that that didn't excuse some of the over-the-top or tonally uneven moments this series. A couple of people mentioned Dr Who and Torchwood... I watch a bit of them, but they are sort of a classic example of the general problem with british TV, which BH series 1 seemed to manage to avoid ... which is that they have grand ideas and plots but often dont quite do them justice in the execution - they aim for stylish thriller but the style's not really there, they aim for moving drama but it's all a bit cheesy really, they aim for clever plot twists but they end up a bit clunky or unconvincing (Unless Steven Moffat is writing...).
I like Being Human and eps 2 and 3 this series were decent. But I'm pretty much just watching to find out what happens to the characters I grew to love last series, rather than because Im enjoying it now.
I am nitpicking in a way... I am being too analytical.. reading too much into it.. but the fact is, great TV stands up to that kind of criticism. I didn't have to 'switch off' that side of me last series... now I do.
But NEVER MIND! I shall now resume theorising about upcoming plot developments and making humourous comments - like did anyone notice the way russell's ears lit up bright red when he was doing that emotional scene with Nina in the glass tunnel in ep 1??

Im not sure where CENSSA sits as far as The Authorities ("The People"?) are concerned? can they really be going to be able to eliminate supernaturals without govt sanction? But if they are an arm of govt - the corruption isnt going to go down well with their moral stance?

As a reply to your comment now I don’t really agree but I can see your point. I like the webisodes as I enjoy the interaction they provide. We knew where the danger would come from this series at the end of last series so the webisodes don’t take any suspense away.
I agree about them not having enough scenes with all the main characters together. I miss having more of those. However I did enjoy the ‘Real Hustle’ scene and wish there were more like it.

If anyone also isn't bothered by spoilers Lastbroadcast gives detailed accounts of what happens up to and including episode 6. It gives you ideas as to Mitchels behaviour in 7.

So, if they really *had* to have a former serviceman as their ghost, they could easily and plausibly have chosen from all three services.
I would hate if Being Human became another Doctor Who clone; I've really enjoyed it being in a completely separate universe to Who/Torchwood and think it's a pity that the inevitable consequence of having someone in an RAF greatcoat is that everyone (me included) thinks about Captain Jack.
