I love Gilbert, he's one of my fave characters from BH. As somebody who grew up in the 80s and knew people like that I couldn't see someone like him falling for someone like Annie but I think it's a tribute to the writers and to Alex for making it so utterly believable. I think Alex's performance was outstanding, just the little looks he gives Annie when she's working through her Owen-angst and the realisation that he has fallen in love with her.

It was an interesting comment. I think to some extent it's true. Through most of high school I found that I didn't fit in because I was an intellectual. I wasn't really into science or really any of my lessons but I read a lot and wrote a lot. I mean for a lot of the time I went to a private school (yeah, yeah, I'm posh, whatever) which had a lot of intellectuals in but not like me. Some of them read a bit but only a couple of them wrote (those that were my friends) and so I was picked on quite a bit.

Plus they all went out at the weekends whereas I would stay in to write. And I got tease a lot for that. Oh and then there were the breaks that I would spend in the library or an empty classroom, I was looked down on for that two.



I suppose it's most obvious in my first high school though. There I was called names like "boffin" and people expected me to be good at my subjects because I was clever. It was annoying and I was horribly bullied for it (which is why I moved to the private school).



Anyway at my first school I tried to hide it and change who I was. In the second I didn't bother since I wasn't really liked much there anyway. It was only when I got to my college that I found loads of other writers when I really felt I fitted in and didn't have to hide myself away anymore.



So yes I think young people do hide their intelligence these days. There's definitely stereotypes (geek, nerd, boffin, ect.) that most young people see as a bad thing to be.



I mean take what Eagle said on the forum the other day about being worried because she ran a fan forum, joined an online game and was thinking of going to a convention. She was talking about it being a bad thing. And that is because of how we are raised. In school our piers teach us that being intelligent is a bad thing. It's how we grow up and live our lives. And it shouldn't be so!



Umm so basically my answers yes... sorry about the slightly ranty essay type thing guys.

I dunno about the hiding your intelligence thing. I suppose it might depend what sort of tribe you feel you belong to such as whether you're a Goth or Skater boy/girl.



I mean back in the 80s not everyone listened to the The Smiths and recited morose texts to eachother. Some of us were out clubbing, drinking purple cocktails and listening to Club Tropicana in our cut off jeans!!

But that's the thing Drivingsuzanne. People have the constant need to stereotype each other. Which is exactly why people feel the need to hide their intelligence. Young people are afraid of being seen as nerdy or geeky so they play down their intellect.

I totally get what you're saying Cieria. Maybe things aren't that different now to what they were then.



But as someone who grew up in the 80s I don't think I had much intelligence to hide in the first place.

I think, when you are secondary school age, you either have to hide your intelligence or get picked on. I was called 'square' for almost my entire secondary school life because I worked hard and did well, until one day one of the popular girls decided she liked me after all and called off all the others with 'Hey, leave off, Sperkii's alright'.



At the time all of that really upset me. If anyone tried to make me feel inferior now, I'd laugh it off (unless I knew I'd done something wrong). One of my favourite sayings is 'noone can make you feel inferior without your permission'. And now my shame most definitely comes from not being well read/cultured/intelligent ENOUGH.



I think it basically depends on a lot of things - the people surrounding you, the culture surrounding you, the broader social context and (I think most importantly) how you feel about yourself.

Hmm its certainly an interesting one - I think it can go either way - I went to a grammar school so it was maybe a little different but the thick kids were picked on for being stupid and the clever ones got picked on for being too smart! So they couldn't really win lol but not entirely sure I really had the teenage phase of trying to fit in etc so I think I was kinda excluded from that - I didn't particularly get picked on once I was at secondary school well I did but it didnt really bother me past about 3rd year I've always just liked what I liked and I had a few close friends who were into similar things - I wasn't part of the cool gang but then I never really wanted to be :-S theres only so long I can listen to a conversation about lipgloss before wanting to shoot myself just so I have an excuse to leave...



I have to say though its interesting seeing it from the other side now - there are some girls doing my college course who have come straight from school and I do think its quite funny - we'll be half way through a talk and theyre sat there re applying mascara lol they do seem to think its cool though to be stupid - id say about half the class are maybe straight from school and you really can tell the difference - its an awful thing to say because I do believe that age is just a number but the ones on my course - God forbid one of us uses a word more than 2 sylables lol they're giggling, theyre ooohing and then asking the tutor what we just said :-S



Sperkii you have a point though - it seems a little odd that they spend half their life trying to dumb it down then the other half trying to look clever and buying certain books just so people see them on the coffee table lol



Sorry long post again :-S its a tough one though because I didnt really grow up "normally" lol I was surrounded by purely adult company which I think might have made me a bit mature beyond my years :-( think C's probably the one to go with because she's still kind of at school so maybe knows better than us :-S

I think this is pointless. Generalization much? Intelligence is subjective. I see great intelligence in my friends who didn't do their G.C.S.E's. I see immense stupidity amongst friends with masters degrees.



The people that I surround myself with are intelligent and bright and wonderful and diverse.

Oooh, also, I think it's important to always try to stay true to who you really are. That popular girl didn't change her mind about me because I had changed to please her or to fit in, it was just one of those silly things where I was the new girl and people had nothing better to do. In the end I think they forgot why they even started picking on me in teh first place.



I could have got involved in all sorts in an attempt to stop the bullying but that would have meant behaving out of character and probably ending up in a lot of trouble. As it was I just stuck it out and then, that one bizarre day, it suddenly became acceptable for me to be the person I had been all along.

Agreed. Most importantly it's about how you see yourself. If you have confidence you can interact with anyone, of any class, education, career, finance divide. If you have to hide your form of intelligence then maybe you aren't reaching yourself enough.

Always be yourself no matter what. Changing yourself to fit in is stupid even if you do hear voices in your head.

Ahem, giddy fit mostly over.... yeah i think Alex has a point about young people hiding their intelligence, mainly to be cool and to fit in. In my experience it wasn't till i grew up a bit and became more of my own person that i started not to care what others thought too much. Though sometimes i still find myself 'acting' to fit in with the crowd more.

I think at high school it could def help. i was ridiculously quiet at a below average performing high school and was always being called the class 'swot' 'nerd' etc...its difficult to hide it when you're always getting A's and silly 'best in class' certificates. i was also relatively quite well spoken compared to the majority of the class (mum was always on my back about diction as a child!), which added to the 'problem'.



But as soon as I got to uni, you realise that in your year are at least another 200 'swots' all with the same common interest, and infact during some teaching sessions it was beneficial to show off your intelligence!!!







Don't know if anyone else has noticed though, but after a few weeks at uni you tend to develop this really annoying, generic, private-school-like accent!?!

-takes sooooo much effort to hold onto your original 'less smart' sounding one!!!

Yes, I think it says something about us, the way we can come on here and still be able to analyse and dissect the characters of a six-part series that finished 4 months ago...it probably also says something about Toby's genius in creating his characters too though. This is why I used to love English Literature classes at school/college...although talking about BH is infinitely more entertaining!!

lol very true :-P mind you I always loved english lit and media - not just the writing/making but the over analysis of every little thing - my idea of fun lol not that youd know it what with me being such a quiet little thing on here ... although had many fallings out with my media teacher because i was prepared to argue my point to the death lol thing is i was nearly always right which she didnt like :-P but then i wasnt there much so when i was there i had to make up for it by being total swot lol even though she did give me F's the whole way through...luckily it wasnt her marking my film or my exam :-D

Speaking of which my media studies teacher has just been on the telly :-) my life in verse episode 2 - I said before that Robert Webb went to my school well anyway he did this show and shes on it apparently talking about TS Elliott but Im not sure havent seen it yet going to iplayer it tomorrow - my school is on it too my old english classroom...all very surreal :-)

With regard’s to the idea of hiding one’s intelligence nowadays, I’ll agree. I’m still in my 2nd year of GCSE’s at this point, so I should probably be able to comment. Yes, I’m at a girls’ private school (go ahead, call me posh, it really doesn’t bother me), and heaven knows I’ve had enough stick over the years, even though I don’t consider myself particularly clever.



I do reasonably well in class (as long as it’s not sporting), and I’ve usually got a book in my hand and ten things going on at once, but that doesn’t constitute intelligence. And yet I have been teased for things like that. Well, not so much teased as got sarky (sp?) nasty remarks along the lines of ‘teacher’s pet’ and ‘stuck up little nerd’ said just behind me, within earshot. So what that I’m a self-confessed fanfic-er and my idea of a satisfying hour is one spent ordering my computer files? I’d have much more to say about vomiting over one’s bedcovers and wearing low-cut tops (yes, it happens at private schools too). Which little bright spark decided that intellectual was un-cool? My parents tell me constantly how much they looked up to the clever kids, those ones in the corridors discussing the plosive vowel sounds during the balcony scene in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (and they definitely weren’t the nerdy ones there; they went out and had fun and got drunk too). Expanding one’s mind and increasing one’s thinking skills is something that is looked up to in my household. I also notice my friends (and yes, if there’s a boffin club, it’s my small friendship group) doing and saying things that they think will make them more IN. They tell me off for translating French passages and exclaiming loudly that they “simply must read this new fanfiction I found on the site” (mostly ‘being human’ fanfic at that; I am very loyal), in case it reflects on them. As far as I’m aware, they have no desire to be part of the IN crowd, but unconsciously seek approval, and walk and talk differently when we pass one of the cool kids in the corridor. So, Alex Price, you’ve got that darn straight.



As for the state school sector, well I do still have some friends from there. All pretty intelligent, yes, but I do feel that one of them in particular hides her intelligence. Though I can’t really comment; you’d have to ask her.
