SYMPATHY FOR SETH?

Although I enjoyed Seth I didn't really have a lot of sympathy for him. I agree he obviously did come much lower down the pecking order to Mitchell despite being recruited before him but both Herrick and Mitchell had the charisma that he lacked.



Seth was often the "fool" in their world. For example when Mitchell confronts Herrick as to Lauren's whereabouts at the start of ep 4 we find it amusing that Seith is being held aloft by the throat and that neither Herrick nor Mitchell are bothered by his discomfort!



We can appreciate that Seth is jealous of Mitchell's status as his killing sprees are much more sophisticated than his own i.e. "getting that tramp in a doorway". But then maybe Seth just hasn't put the homework in as he knew nothing of the vampire history of Bristol. At the end of the day Seth is the thug elemnet of the group and maybe Herrick finds him useful for that reason.

I agree with Herrick...he's an idiot.....a bit Jacobs Creeky for me...but having said that I would love to see him back...we only saw him get staked, you never know some caring Vampire may have rushed him to hospitl. I hope so

Hmmm. Weird question!

Seth's one of my favourite characters, and the show would definitely have been poorer without him. But I'm not sure that I have "sympathy" for him. After all he beat poor George up for no reason (aww). I think the character is basically there to provide a contrast to both Mitchell and Herrick (and to deliver some brilliant lines).



I've just realised that it's quite interesting that Mitchell only met George because of Seth. And George and Annie are the main thing keeping Mitchell away from the vampires. If only Herrick knew what Seth had started! He would probably have staked him himself...

I don't have much sympathy for him, but I think he's a great character, he makes me laugh so much and gets loads of the best lines!

would love to know more of his back history. I feel abit sorry for him now, with the "being usurped in Herrick's eyes by Mitchell" thing.

vampfan - indeed, if our heroes can get Mitchell to A & E after a Herrick seeing-to, I'm sure the same could be done for Mr Cockbottomley. Although Lauren did seem to have a better aim than Herrick!!

I wasn't going to comment because of the DVD fiasco but then I felt really guilty for the fab blog team who, once again, have come up with a nice vid for us. I think Seth is the typical bullied-to-bully type. I do have a small amount of sympathy for the way he is treated by the others but I don't think it excuses his behaviour.

I feel a bit sorry for Seth because he obviously craves the attention and status that Mitchell gets from Herrick. He tries to command respect, but it just doesn't happen because he's not that bright or quick witted. Like that queston he asks Annie about if she can walk from room to room, and George says that everyone can do that, it makes him sound stupid because of the way he phrased it. I get that impression that that kind of thing happens quite a lot and it frustrates him.

So, yeah I feel sorry for him a bit, but on the other hand he is a 'killing machine' so maybe he deserves what he gets.

I think that it's hard to have sympathy for Seth. He wasn't that big a character and when we saw him he was mostly being an evil vampire - if a bit thick. Personally I fell in love with him in episode 5 when George and Annie run into him and he was all "Can you like pick up stuff and walk from one room to the other?" And then a little bit later he got staked.



Maybe if we'd seen a bit more of him and his character had developed a bit more then we might have had more sympathy for him. Though of course he is one of the bad guys so it would be hard to develop him as a character.



I think I would like to see him back if they had managed to get him to a hospital or something but it would have to be well done. It's one of those things that could be good or complete rubbish depending on how well it's done.

Extended and deleted scenes - LOVE although the epiode 1 one eplains so much of the story and the characters I cant beleve it got cut although sperkiiidissagree about the gilbert one - they were right to cu that in my opinion - flows better without the dilogue i think.



Everything else -RUINED!



Episode 1 opening -RUINED without supergrass

George in woods RUINED without arctic monkeys - seriously ruined not just me throwing a paddy it completely changes the tone and ood and just grrr - WHY!?!



Got so annoyed i switched to disc 2 after that scene - BIG MISTAKE the track change episode 4 opening - OH MY GOD I have never been so annoyed about a TV show - my favourite part of the whole series and its completely ruined - the music just isnt right its not drmatic in the right places - ive got so used to singing the "dont call the doctor" line after Mitchell says his bit and now?! now the musics just blah its just boring its just realy really naff! theres absolutelyo umph to that scene at all i know this is harsh but its absolutely rubbish now :-(



Ok Barry and blog people I know this isnt your fault and I still really appreciate everything you lot have done for us on here its made the show what it is but just please pass on our serious annoyance and how upset we are to whoever sabotaged the show we loved so much and were so passionate about :-(

I love the vid of Seth!! It wasn't working earlier and I think I was so impatient to be first on here. But Dylan Brown has such a great take on the character of Seth - he completely gets him when he says that he has more of an urge to overpower rather than be in charge which is probably very true.



I would love to see more of these vids on some of the other characters but I have to say I'm really not fussed about the Bristolian canteen lady.

Ok maybe not enough of a sorry to beinghumanproducton - really think you guys are brilliant and thanks for the video even though as usual cant see it yet because its too new and busy but love the fact that you listened to us and took note of how much we loved seth...just a shame the people in charge of the dvd obviously wasnt bothered about our comments otherwise they wouldve realised that the music was one of our favourite things about the show and that the music was what made the show what it was and also would know our favourite scenes and not ruined them :-(

The blog team probably can't comment on it all, even if they want to. Even though I feel the same as you about the DVD, eagle, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I seriously doubt that our feedback is being ignored.

To sum up: the DVD SUCKS and was a BIG mistake and has annoyed a lot of loyal fans. BUT we still love the blog team and they have played a massive part in keeping us all talking about the show in the first place.

I don't exactly feel sympathy for Seth because he did come across as a bit of a cruel, stupid idiot. But I do feel for him a bit having Mitchell turn up and totally take over. Imagine you worked for your boss for years then some newcomer turns up and gets promoted over you. You would be SO annoyed. I think Seth comes across as jealous/envious of Mitchell and I can imagine Herrick totally playing them off against each other. I'd love to see more of their backstory.

One set just after WW1 that shows the fun/cool side of becoming a vampire and Mitchell just totally revelling in it. Then one set in the 60s where he's just becoming jaded and sick of that life.

So jealousy and envy have different roots/meanings and it was summed up as jealousy is wanting to hold on to what you've got (being possessive etc) and envy is wanting something you've not got. Therefore, Herrick is jealous of Mitchell because he's finally met his match, someone who's taken his "gift" (the gift of vampirism) and run with it and has a certain charisma/charm that even he lacks. Maybe he sees in Mitchell a younger version of himself and he doesn't want to lose that. I think there is a weird possessive co-dependency between them. I think he loves hanging out with Mitchell because he's in a different league to the other vampires. It's like the mid life crisis guy with his hot younger wife, lol, he doesn't want to lose Mitchell.

But Seth is envious of Mitchell. Again, he sees Mitchell as having this effortless charm/cool that just seems to have come naturally to him and that he can never have. He knows Mitchell doesn't see him as a equal and that he's replaced him in Herrick's affections and he's fascinated by him in that strange way people are when they're envious/jealous of someone. So he has total first wife syndrome.

And I still think Herrick would totally play them off against each other.

Sympathy for Seth, the creepy vamp that's been stalking my dreams and giving me nightmares... noooooooooo, none what so ever.

Hes with Herrick for years doing his thing and having a good time then he gets traded in for a younger model and stuck with teh secretary job - think id be bitter too



although to be fair - seth is very much like the wife and mitchell the mistress lol - mtichells the cool sexy younger one whos a laugh and fun to be with but hes fickle he comes and goes as he pleases whereas seths safer - hes always there and herrick obviously trusts him more - he knows about the feeding room etc whereas he has to lie and pretend to mitchell



I dont think it was always like that though - think when Mitchell was waltzing about pulling girls with herrick poor seth was very much pushed out of the picture.

Seth was refreshingly honest, what you saw is what you got along with some of the very best lines.



He was a character who went far too soon.



Lets not forget HE'S A VAMPIRE, and unlike Mitchell not whiney and hung up on all the politically correct idiosynchrasies of going around drinking peoples blood.



Surely in the case of Mitchell, to make out you're a decent kind of chap and then inadvertantly sink your teeth into the neck of the person you're meant to be having a date with, and then to self indulgently agonise about it afterwards is far more antisocial and deserving of criticism than anything Seth ever did?



He's just doing what's in his nature.



Mitchell even goes around Vampiring, (probably not a word), young children!



That's never going to end well is it?



Bet Seth wouldnt do that!



Doubt he even likes kids!

I wasn't keen on 'coolest of the cool' scene, the 'girlfriend/boyfriend' scene or the 'doggy style' scene (talking about the DVD extras for those who are confused). Glad they got cut. All the others should have been kept in though, as they were crucial to the characters and the story. Especially considering a couple of clumsy things slipped through the editing net, like the 'affair with Hitler' line.

I'm awaiting my DVD's with absolute terror now after what you lot have been saying!

and OI!! stop knocking Mitchell! as I remember he only told Fleur what he was able to do, it was her choice ultimately to turn Bernie into a vampire, so blame her.

Brookesie, tbh, that was part of the thing that wound me up - Mitchell made sure he placed all the responsibility on Fleur, so there were no comebacks for himself. He'd have done them more of a favour if he'd left Fleur alone to grieve. Grrr.

maybe, but I suppose by that time he was really close to Bernie as well, so wanted to try and do something. Perhaps he really thought that what he was trying to do what was right - we've all agreed he's quite rubbish at being human sometimes. I think maybe when he meets Bernie at the station it starts to prey on his mind, what he's done perhaps. So maybe when he goes back to the vampires he's never really 100% for them.

I don't care anyway, I'd stick up for him if he was worse behaved than Mr Cockbottomley, he's so darn gorgeous!! Sorry!

Yes I sort of fell bad for him. But I did love everything that happened. But I felt that there was a bit of angst between Seth & Mitchell an old love affair? They seemed like a bitter broken up couple.

Good decision upping the posts to appease the very unhappy fans. It's not your fault about the DVD i realise Barry but still the extra effort is appreciated!!



But a comment/explanation on the blog about why the music is different and to say whether a better edition might be available later on... would be nice.





Ok Seth... I feel sorry for the fact that he's stupid and easily manipulated, but he gave in to the vampire monstrosity, to the aggressive, destructive urges that come with it.. got taken in by Herrick and is just a grinning, maniacal little goblin.

Mitchell... brilliant vampire, but ultimately struggles with being human, well he has been a vamp for over 90 yrs, at least he's making an effort.



Anyway back to Seth... Bill Bailey said "America's like the bully of the world, going up to countries and saying 'give us your sweets or I'll smash your face in' and Britain leans round the back, shakes its fist, and goes 'yeeaahh.'

Now imagine it's Herrick rather than America and Seth rather than Britain. That's how I picture Seth, he had an over inflated sense of power because he had Herrick on his side. Herrick thinks very little of Seth calling him an idiot and generally making him the butt of jokes. You have to wonder why Herrick kept him so ill-informed...



In summary:



Sympathy? No.



Pity? Bucket loads.



But no more Seth talk for me... I've only just got rid of the dreams/nightmares.

i think that Seth could come back. Just in like a one off, or something. He could have being staked close to his heart, but not in his heart, as it looked like the stake when throught the middle of his chest, not slightly to the right.

But i do feel sympathy for him, as he had it ruff and seems like the kind of dude that loved being Herrrick's No. 1 Man. And then Mitchell took his place. But he did take his anger out on everyone else.

Though most of us had worked out that it was to do with copyright (interesting to hear how that works actually, thanks), I think the thing which bugged us was that we weren't expecting it and, with all due respect (which is a lot), the music which was composed/chosen in the place of the ones used in the broadcast version DIDN'T have the same tone at all and really DID affect the scenes we loved.



Also, I wonder what the excuse was for the lack of special features?



I am very grateful to the blog team - you are fab and bring us a lot of cool stuff - and I'm sorry that we have ranted to you on here, as it was not aimed at you. I, as I'm sure most will, massively appreciate that you took the time to answer us on this, as the DVD disaster was not your doing.



I'm afraid it doesn't change my feelings about the DVD though. It's a shame really because it will encourage piracy and illegal downloads, I'm afraid to say.



Anyway, I'm not going to say anything else about it (except perhaps in response to fellow bloggers - I'm sure eagle will have something to say!) because what's done is done. I have sold my copy of the DVD on Ebay and won't be chancing purchasing Series 2, as I simply cannot afford to spend the little money I have (which should be for essentials), only to be so bitterly disappointed again.



I am very sorry that I feel that way because I really, really didn't want to and I wanted to give as much support as possible to the show.



But BH Prod, you're still ace, and no doubt we will all still credit your hard work by continuing to contribute to discussions.

I appreciate the explanation BUT personally I would rather have waited a bit longer for the DVD and had something that was true to the TV series. They've changed the music for several of my favourite scenes and even used different dialogue/shots. I'm sorry but I'm not aware of any other TV show that's done this with a DVD release so I am a bit disappointed. It just feels like they rushed the DVD out to cash in on the popularity of the show. Surely when the show was being made/aired they were aware it would be coming out on DVD and they could have got the music clearance sorted out in time.

jaynedoll, I do agree completely. But what can anyone do now? I think they get the message, as I'm sure our views have been passed on by the blog team. If they don't get the message they'll end up losing the fans which 'made them' in the first place.



We can always lodge complaints with the BBC (can do that online) if we feel so inclined but I am really starting to feel sorry for the poor blog team.

Completely not fussed about the music thing. The channel 4 show As If never even made it to DVD because of the battles over the music rights, and I've been lamenting over it for years. We should probably just consider ourselves lucky that we got the BH DVD at all..



FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY: YAY SETH!!! You have no idea how much I squealed through that, thank you so so so much :D I should say something constructive but I'm too excited (common problem with this blog), and where is super_ochre when you need her?? He reminds me of a Uriah Heep type of character, all that cloying insincere sychophantic obsequiousness to Herrick & Mitchell masking his bitterness & resentment & his hunger for power & violence

I think hes suffereing from angry little man syndrome. Even though he doesn't really like either of them, he regards them both as more important & with more authority than him & he is desperate for their approval & acknowledgement.



All he needs is a few years therapy & the ability to let go & stop worrying about Mitch & Herrick and he'd probably be a decent chap, he might even turn out to be cool.

He just needs a little confidence boost & the love of a good woman! ;)

If the series runs for 2 or 3 more seasons then there'd be a boxset right? Hopefully with more special features. And hopefully if the shows profile goes up the artists might think twice..

Thank you BeingHumanProduction for giving us an explaniation and I really do appreciate it. I feel very guilty that we had to take out our disappointment and anger on you guys as you really do give us loads of great stuff here on the blog and please dont think we dont appreciate it because we really do! Im still bitterly disappointed and do believe that we should have been at least warned - and although they said they tried to keep the original tone/effect etc that really didnt happen and i still feel that it seems like a completely different show - and also stand by what i said yesterday that it seems as though the dvd was rushed out as quickly as possible so as to cash in before people forgot about it whereas i think it would have much better and more appreciated had they took pride in the dvd and time had been spent on trying to get the rights to the music as well as producing a few more special features - it seemed like so much time and effort went into the show making everything perfect and everyone involved seemed to have such pride in the end result which didnt come across in the dvd at all.



But still - I really appreciate the explanation as does everyone else im sure and you guys are completely forgiven although people in charge of the dvd - still not! Sorry.
