What did Jane Austen really look like?

Anne Diamond

Even her own family, when choosing a picture for a later book about her, had trouble coming up with a true representation. Her own sister, Cassandra, had done a pen and ink sketch of her years before, but no-one liked that. In the end, a portrait was painted from people’s memories and reflections. And that’s the picture that’ll finally make it on the £10 note in 2017. Some think it’s saccharine and unduly feminised. But it’s probably the closest to how she is often described. The main thing is that at last we’re paying tribute to a great author.
