Electric Picnic 2011 - Nightbox
Cosby Stage, Saturday 3rd September, 12.15pm
Describe in a Tweet: The boys are back, and you can call at least one of them Al.
What Happened: "The good thing is that when mixed with their infectious indie pop, you can forgive them. But it's something they'll have to tackle before progressing anywhere near to the standard of their influences." The words ATL used back at Oxegen '09 to explain why Nightbox's weak vocals were the only hurdle the Wicklow 5-piece needed to overcome - at the time though, it was a deal breaker.
Well, two years later and the boys seemed to have taken our learned advice. The act was fresh, tight and more importantly came with a big, impressive vocal performance from frontman 'Jake Bitove'. He crooned and screamed like he'd been born to. They've expanded their repetoire as well, bringing in some really catchy 3 minute pop tunes. What a great way to kick off day 2 of EP.
From this performance, it's evident the boys have also benefited from their association with ultra-hip label Kitsuné, who've recently been doing wonderful, wonderful things with Two Door Cinema Club.
Swoon: The very Friendly Fires (good thing!) sounding Pyramid managed to kick everyone into shape. But it was the flirty synth cover of Paul Simon's Call Me Al which had everyone throwing shapes as the rest of EP woke up.
Funeral: Bad time management meant they had to cut short the end of their set.
EP rating: 8/10 (up from a meager 5.5 two years ago)
