Interpol at Electric Picnic 2011 by Carrie Davenport - www.carriedavenport.com

What happened: Interpol are a band caught in limbo. As live performers they know they can rely upon their first two albums to please a crowd but their newer releases are somewhat of a damp squib in comparison. With that in mind (and the loss of bassist Carlos Dengler) the setlist can be as important as the actual musical performance and in that respect they deliver: we're treated to the classic anthems of C'mere and Evil sounding as dark and intense as ever but there's a severe lack of enthusiasm for songs from their self titled fourth release that are liberally sprinkled throughout this set. The stage presence is a little muted - Paul Banks will not be described as an energetic performer any time soon - but the music itself is as special as ever. Those offbeat basslines interlace with the powerful drumming of Sam Fogarino and create something a little bit magical, helped out somewhat by the simple yet effective light show. For a headliner at the main stage the crowd is somewhat sparse and there's a feeling that DJ Shadow is just too much of a draw for the revellers tonight, but for the Interpol fans they will be pleased with this slot at Stradbally.

Good Fortune: NYC was a truly beautiful moment and everything finally seems to click: the front rows are the backing choir for Banks as he mounfully sings that iconic refrain. We're not quite sure where the harmonies are meant to be, but the Electric Picnic audience dutifully fill in.

Evil: This was a performance for the fans and definitely not for the masses. Tracks like Hands Away will find favour with the faithful but for onlookers it all just seems a bit dull. The newer material doesn't stand up live and while we understand Interpol's decisions it does take away from the set.
