SuggestiON-AIR: Festival Surprise!

Post categories:

ATL|14:01 UK time, Monday, 22 August 2011

Festivals are as much about catching something new as they are about going to see your favourite headliner. Tennants Vital begins tomorrow, with plenty of Northern Irish talent peppered throughout the two days, and we're hoping some folk might be pleasantly surprised by some of the musical offerings this little corner of the world has to offer.

With that in mind, we'd like to hear about the time you stumbled upon a band you'd previously never heard or cared for, but cemeneted themselves as a favourite after catching them unexpectedly? Hit us up on Facebook /Twitter or you can text 81771 after 8pm tonight. Here's team ATL's picks...

Kraftwerk - Benicassim 2004

(Rigsy - ATL Presenter)

This may sound ridiculous, but I'd never given Kraftwerk much time before seeing them play Benicassim in 2004. Of course I knew who they were and had enjoyed a handful of songs, but I wasn't enough of a fan to have them on my 'must see' list for the festival. I attended their set by default (there was nothing else on), only to be completely blown away, utterly spellbound by every glorious note of music and creepy move they made during an astonishing 90 minute set. I'd downloaded their entire back catalogue within moments of arriving back in Belfast, long before I unpacked.

Idlewild - Witnness 2000

(Amy McGarrigle - Content Assistant)

If I recall right, this was the first ever Witnness, and my first ever festival to boot. I was waiting in one of the tents to see …And You Will know Us by the Trail of Dead (who were brilliant), and sat through a number of pretty indistinct bands to make sure I got front and centre. But then Idlewild took to the stage, a band I knew of but never really paid any attention to. Roddy Womble arrived on stage and piece by piece took my mind apart. One of the most influential gigs I've prob ever been too, I instantly went and bought an Idlewild t-shirt the moment I finally left the tent. It was the first time I'd witnessed a gig with such energy and recklessness, and showed me just how exciting live music could be - and all I was doing was waiting for another band.
