Chattering Classes #43 - Iain Archer

Post categories:

ATL|14:55 UK time, Thursday, 21 April 2011

For this week's online chat - well it was about time we caught up with Mr. Iain Archer. Since he's last been on ATL, he's made a record with Gary Lightbody and Peter Buck and started work on his new solo record. Then there's the small matter of a gig at The Black Box this Sunday. So plenty to chat about!

What we didn't expect was to hear about his collaboration with a genuine popstar and some dubstep legends....

(Please note - spelling/grammar are authors own - chat is simply copied and pasted.....)

Rigsy says: good afternoon sir. i just got my hair cut, i wish you could see it

Iain says: how did ya fair - were they kind?

Rigsy says: well, it takes a couple of days for it to kinda settle in.

it's a bit 'LOOK AT MY SHORT HAIR' at the moment

Iain says: bit like bad news. or very very good news

Rigsy says: well yes. but it's grand. you have to make the effort you know.

Iain says: tell me about it, haven't been sheared for about 8 months

Rigsy says: hippy

Iain says: wish i could say it was intentional. i need a special occasion…or sumthin like that...

Rigsy says: you have artistic license though. you're like an actor. it's like you're doing it for a role. while i just look stupid

Iain says: looking stupid's the new looking clever

Rigsy says: well then i look like einstien. which i can't even spell. oh the ironing

Iain says: ha

Rigsy says: ANYWAY. so your over on sunday?

Iain says: what no more hair chat?

Rigsy says: mate i'd love to do an entire interview about hair but i feel i would be letting down a lot of people who want to 'hear about the music'. but yes, easter sunday - what does that mean to you, what are your memories of easter sunday as a kid

Iain says: juniper hill caravan site, portrush. cloud. rain. drizzle

Rigsy says: ha ha, totally

Iain says: magic though

Rigsy says: how did you entertain yourself in a caravan with the rain outside? my mum had us playing poker!! and listening to suzanne vega

Iain says: we sang showaddy waddy

Rigsy says: ha ha, amazing

Iain says: yea paul [Iain's brother] and i liked the ol showaddy

Rigsy says: explains a lot and i mean that in the best possible way, ha

Iain says: sunday's a sad kinda day sometimes. but there's a day off monday so it doesn't count eh?!

Rigsy says: where are you based at the moment iain?

Iain says: North London

Rigsy says: so is this a nice wee weekend you'll make of it?

Iain says: I'm in sunday off monday. but i was back 2 weeks ago for the Depaul trust show in the city hall. so I'm in and out a lot at the mo

Rigsy says: yes we saw the video in ward park [by Bandwidth]. very cool

Iains says: that was triffic

Rigsy says: are you going to look out for number one a bit more in 2011? an iain archer album. none of this moonlighting with others

Iain says: well I've been making some song like stuff

Rigsy says: always a good start….

Iain says: that might find it's way onto a record, but I'm working on lots of other projects. so i've gotta down tools at some point. and then pick them up for myself.

Rigsy says: that's good and everything, honestly, and i loved the tired pony record….but we need an IA album

Iain says: me too

Rigsy says: hurry up then

Iain says: well this is the incentive

Rigsy says: what's the other projects? i'mma gonna 'poo poo' them one by one

Iain says: I've been writing last coupla days with Joel from Athtlete for an artist that shall go un-named

Rigsy says: booooo

Iain says: Writing with Newton Faulkner, example

Rigsy says: example?

Iain says: for their new records

Rigsy says: hold on. example?

Iain says: yea example

Rigsy says: like kickstarts example?

Iain says: Elliot's a grew man. Chase and Status are producing our track ha

Rigsy says: right. what's this all about. example and chase and status?!

Iain says: songs songs songs

Rigsy says: mate that is absolutely amazing. chase and status album is one of my favourites of the last couple of years. example make great pop songs too

Iain says: yeah looks like e's in at no 2 this week

Rigsy says: how did that happen? i mean it's great but it just seems a bit random

Iain says: I love what he does. he's a great character. but i love writing with all sorts of folk - not just guitar singers. s'fun

Rigsy says: how did you hook up with him?

Iain says: his people/my people

Rigsy says: so what happens, when does this stuff see the light of day?

Iain says: we'll see, you never know till a record's out

Rigsy says: chase and status though! iain archer goes dustup? iain racer goes dn'b?! i don't understand. BUT I'M VERY EXCITED. what does it sound like?

Iain says: there are a few great songs in the pipeline, but i gotta make a record. that's what i gotta do.

Rigsy says: so are the songs with Example gonna end up on his record or your record or one off or what?

Iain says: who knows - e's record potentially

Rigsy says: but the next record that comes out that will have your name on it - what will that be? tired pony?

Iain says: I reckon a solo record - as in my name on the front of the sleeve

Rigsy says: damn right. what will it sound like?

Iain says: the bow of my old boat crunching the tide. and the dawn chorus

Rigsy says: I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THAT!!

Iain says: no it's a beautiful hollow sound that you hear nowhere else. me ol' boat

Rigsy says: honestly iain, we can't wait. we're up for this one

Iain says: hey thanks! miss that boat

Rigsy says: boat is london slang you've picked up. boat race = face

Iain says: I met some great people last year working on TP [Tired Pony] and I'd love to get them involved in something. we'll see. that was an amazing record to make.

Rigsy says: peter buck shares my birthday you know. so there. you might have made a record with him but we're birthday buddies -thats a special bond man

Iain says: well maybe you guys should actually share that bday

Rigsy says: when yr talking to him tell him about yr buddie in belfast, okay? 6th december FTW - he'll know what that means

Iain says: I'll mention it - he likes mexico - maybe that's a destination

Rigsy says: dublin?

Iain says: that's another one for sure

Rigsy says: right i've eaten enough of your time. thanks so much - we'll see you in the studio soon no doubt, proper chat. tell chase and indeed status that i said they're awesome

Iain says: I will do. good to hear ya mr

Rigsy says: have a good day!
