Heliopause.jpgStarted by filmmaker Richard Davis in 2006, Heliopause have truly come into their own over the last few months. After settling as a three piece, including stalwarts of the Belfast music scene Chris McCorry and Niall Harden, the band released the single 'Moment of Recognition' (newly mastered version below) last year. This was quickly followed by a new three track EP 'Let The Silence Go' which has seen them sounding better than ever.

Currently residing in Brighton, Richard is back in Belfast this Thursday (18th Feb) as Heliopause are set to open this month's Two Step Club night at the Limelight. Rigsy caught up with him for a chat to tell us all from the Heliopause camp before the gig with Before Machines and Continuous Battle of Order...

14.07 Richard says: hey

14:07 rigsy says: yo yo! are you ready to be interview to within an inch of your life my friend

14:08 Richard says: ooh i wasn't nervous til now!! yeah go on then

14:08 rigsy says: mate, you should be nervous. tony blair thought he had it tough last week... where are you, what can you see around you? and does your office smell of wet cat like mine does?

14:09 Richard says: i'm at brighton uni computer room, lots of computers, students, but

no wet cat smell thankfully. just over powered air con

14:10 rigsy says: do you live in brighton at the moment? i didn't know that

14:10 Richard says: yeah i sneaked off to study digital art brighton's a great place too

14:10 rigsy says: yeah, always wanted to visit. anywayz, heliopause

14:11 Richard says: yup

14:11 rigsy says: never really been sure, is it a collaborative effort or pretty much just you?

14:12 Richard says: it began as me and can be me here but it really is a band, what makes it is niall and chris adding their genius

14:12 rigsy says: this is niall harden, who's also your label boss??!!

14:12 Richard says: i like the adaptability of it. yeah this is the one and only. label boss ? hmm hehe

14:13 rigsy says: he's an intimidating character tbf

14:13 Richard says: it's great he is furious to allow us to get on and get our stuff out there

14:13 rigsy says: label is furious tradesmen for anyone reading and wondering! so you mentioned you are studying digital art you're clearly a creative chap...

14:14 Richard says: yeah, its quite exiting. i've always been the artist and made videos. always creating music or visuals.

14:15 rigsy says: well that was gonna be my next question... you're obviously going to work hard at artwork... videos... what else is important other than the music obviously

14:14 Richard says: yeah. Art has always been my passion but I'm taking it down the more interactive route now. the work i'm doing is geared more towards interactive and art installation but i'm attempting to fuse my music with this over the next two years!

14:16 rigsy says: how does that side of your creativity relate back to the music then?

14:16 Richard says: hmm, good question...

14:16 rigsy says: thank you *smug*

14:17 Richard says: i found i can only express my personal emotion through music, doing visual art is very different if that makes sense

14:18 rigsy says: but when you make a song... is how it's presented - visually with artwork and a video etc - on your mind straight away?

14:19 Richard says: yeah, being the artist you'd think so, but i find it hard to visually re-interpret my songs. i'm hoping to get other people i trust to do our video when we ever get round to it.

14:19 rigsy says: that's strange... a video maker who ain't keen on making videos for his own songs... although in a weird way it's understandable! our time is almost up

14:20 Richard says: yeah i know, but hey, we're not all perfect

14:20 rigsy says: before i let you go. we were always fans of heliopause, played youz loads on the show and all that but this new track 'city of glass'. holy guacamole!!

14:21 Richard says: glad you really like it!

14:21 rigsy says: while people go and listen to it IMMEDIATELY, tell me a little bit about it i love it mate, honestly

14:21 Richard says: it's off our debut album and its quite an old song that was re-invented when chris (our guitarist) replaced michael (now in not squares).

we're really proud of it and all the new stuff, infact there's more, as we have a new ep available online now too!

14:22 rigsy says: the production is lovely. It's got a massive shine now or something

12:22 Richard says: thanks ben @ start together, he's great!

14:22 rigsy says: good old start together (rocky oppenheimer's studio folks!) well i'll let you go. look forward to playing the EP on the show. i'm off to the bakery to buy sausage rolls as for you... GET BACK TO WORK

14:23 Richard says: cool hopefully see you at our twostep gig! laters

14:23 rigsy says: nice one dude!

14:23 Richard says: good to talk to you
