New features on their way to BBC Sounds

Lloyd Shepherd

Head of Product, BBC Sounds

BBC Sounds has had a terrific start to 2020, with big-hitting returners like That Peter Crouch Podcast, the brilliant Brexitcast becoming Newscast as well as other podcasts and music mixes recently announced which will be on Sounds over the coming months.

It’s not just Peter Crouch who’s back stronger. Our team have also been making improvements to the BBC Sounds app, improving playback and making it easier to manage your downloads. We’ve also introduced a new True Crime category, making it easier to find extraordinary podcasts like Manhunt: Finding Kevin Parle, mortem and the amazing The Missing Cryptoqueen.

Listener feedback has always been really valuable for us at Sounds, and has helped inform our introduction of things like live pause, rewind and restart, new categories and the sleep timer, and now we’re introducing something we know some people have been really keen to see – dark mode.

Soon, listeners will be getting the option of switching the current bright BBC Sounds app interface to a darker version, with light-coloured text and icons on a dark background, instead of dark texts on a white or light background. You can switch dark mode on or off in the settings section of the app. Settings can be found under the cog icon in My Sounds. Dark mode will begin rolling out on iOS first, and will come to Android devices soon after.

We’re also making some improvements to the Sounds website, giving all our radio homepages a consistent home on BBC Sounds to replace the separate homepages on the BBC website. Listeners should be able to find what they want to listen in fewer clicks, as well as discovering a wide variety of podcasts, music mixes and other additional content around their favourite radio programmes. So, if you’re a fan of BBC Radio 4, going to www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 will take you to the Radio 4 page in Sounds, where you can stream the live Radio 4 broadcast, find editorial highlights from across the station, get the latest episodes of shows like The Archers or Desert Island Discs, and find fascinating podcasts like The Whisperer In The Darkness or Fake Heiress.

We’re always looking to make people’s experience of BBC Sounds better, so please keep the feedback coming in. We really do listen.
