A round-up of BBC announcements and press releases and blogs, plus some highlights from our TV, radio and online output last week.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016

Birmingham has been confirmed as the venue for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award

Appointments

Following a recent strategic reorganisation, Patrick Holland has been appointed Channel Editor of BBC Two. Elsewhere, Piers Wenger was announced to be the new Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning.

Announcements

Drama

It was announced that BBC One’s Casualty will mark its 30th anniversary with an action-packed high adrenaline feature-length film which will broadcast on Saturday 27 August. 

In other Drama news for BBC One the network announced new drama Three Girls, a new three-part drama based on the true stories of victims of grooming and sexual abuse in Rochdale.

Entertainment

The dynamic new Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer line-up which includes three brand new sensational dancers alongside the return of viewers’ favourites, was revealed this week.

Factual

The Hairy Builder series, starring Hairy Biker’s Dave Myers, starts on Monday 11 July on BBC Two. In BBC One Factual news, Lucy Alexander has taken the decision to step down as presenter of Homes Under The Hammer, after 13 years in the role.

Children's

My Life, CBBC’s award-winning documentary strand, will return to the channel later in the year with a series of films that follows the lives of children with incredible stories to tell.

Meanwhile, CBeebies announced a brand new 30-part drama series, Apple Tree House, set around an inner-city estate bursting with life.

BBC Music

BBC Music announced that Rolling Stone legend Keith Richards is to front a film for BBC Two to air in July, and this Autumn will curate an incredible weekend of programming for BBC Four.

Radio

BBC Radio 1 announced plans for a 10 hour celebration of independent record labels on Monday 4th July. Elsewhere, BBC Radio 4 Extra will broadcast a season of classic musicals from the radio archives. 

Meanwhile, the referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union has prompted the biggest reaction ever from listeners to BBC Radio 5 live.

Regional

Would-be audiences were this week warned that tickets are selling fast for BBC Proms in the Park in Colwyn Bay. BBC Radio Devon announced that Janet Kipling has been appointed as the station’s Lunchtime Presenter on a permanent basis.

International

BBC World Service has joined forces with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) to create animations which bring to life choice audio nuggets from the service’s output.

Blogs

On the blog we published a round up of highlights from the Glastonbury Festival; Ed Jon Jacob learned to love football thanks to Radio 5 Live's coverage of the Euros; while there was (More) Wales at Euro 2016 care of Rob Phillips, BBC Wales' Football Correspondent; and Matthew Bannister celebrated the BBC World Service Outlook series which turns 50 this year.
