This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on The Deceived, a four-part haunted house thriller from Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee, and her partner Tobias Beer.

Scott says: “It’s creepy… I really liked it"

"I really liked it. I think what I love is that it’s a very simple premise. You don’t have to make it incredibly complex at first to make it haunting. It manages to pull off a great amount of creepiness, without relying on many special effects or gore. It’s about what you think might happen, rather than what is happening.

“We also have to point out that it is Channel 5 doing something like this. It’s easy to look down on Channel 5 because some nights they have programmes dedicated to counting down crisps or jacket potatoes, but actually they do invest in a lot of homegrown drama and are starting to beat their rivals in the ratings. They are getting high class actors at the top of their game who end up being nominated for Emmys [like Paul Mescal, who is in this drama].

“The fact that they’ve managed to get Lisa [McGee] and Tobias [Beer] onboard and strip it throughout the entire week is a great idea. I think that if I was Channel 4 I’d be quite worried that they’ve been able to pull such feats like this constantly.”

Hayley says: “It’s very watchable – I’m excited about seeing the rest"

"I loved it. When it begins, the story is quite a well-worn one - the student has an affair with a married teacher, but then it gets weird and it maybe has a ghost in it, maybe not.

"There’s a scene with the hallway and the door knocking which is so creepy, but it’s very, very Haunting of Hill House, and anything that reminds me of Shirley Jackson is never a bad thing, so I really liked it.

"I think it’s very watchable and I don’t know what they’re doing with it or where it’s going, but nothing messes me up quite as much as a potentially haunted house scenario. I’m excited about seeing the rest."
