The Plot Against America: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on The Plot Against America.

It is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by the late Philip Roth. It looks at an alternate history in which 1940s America has become a fascist state, and stars Winona Ryder.

It's available now on Sky Atlantic and Now TV.

Scott says: "I loved its attention to detail"

“My anxiety was that it was going to be a bit too laboured, as there have been many people associating this book a lot with Trump's administration.

"However, I loved it. I loved its attention to detail, I love the richness of how it captures 1940s America, and how it shows extremist political opinions can have severe and terrifying consequences."

Hayley says: "When it came out it felt alarmist - now it feels too real"

"I really liked it and I really liked this novel. It came out in 2004 and when Roth wrote it he was imagining how America and his own life as a child would have changed if the presidential race had been won by this pro-fascist right-wing Republican.

"When it came out I think it was viewed as alarmist, a kind of science fiction fantasy horror story, sort of like a thought experiment but now it feels too real."
