The Umbrella Academy season 2: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on The Umbrella Academy season two.

The comic superhero series is back after an 18 month wait. This time the Hargreeves siblings are transported back to the 1960s, finding themselves in Dallas, Texas.

It's available now on Netflix.

Scott says: "The less you think about the plot, the more you enjoy the ride"

"The first series lost its way a bit. It was popular for Netflix, but I think many people weren’t able to get past the episode five hump, because it features many characters endlessly talking about their feelings, which made the plot a bit too convoluted. Then it finally remembered that it was a show in about episode eight and really racked up a notch.

"I’m trying not to reveal too much for people who haven’t finished season one, but it’s kind of a bit like they went ‘OK, there were mistakes, let’s not do that again,’ and then with season two they’ve kind of started it all over again.

"I don’t want to say what happens at the end [of season one] but that’s left unresolved - they seem to leave that aside and then go back to the 1960’s to solve another apocalypse. As you do.

"I think it does it really well. The less you think about the plot, the more you enjoy the ride, and the funnier and more interesting it is too. I just hope it doesn’t get too bogged down in the later episodes this time, which I have not yet seen.”

Hayley says: "I just want Ellen Page to do more interesting things"

"Rebooting and starting again is what comic books do all the time - they get to a point where they don’t know what’s going on anymore and they go ‘let’s go to issue one’ and they start again. So it's all in keeping with where it came from, which is a comic that has a massive fanbase.

"I never made it to episode eight where this show remembers it's a show - so I missed the final apocalypse and started with a whole new apocalypse. It felt like I was watching the show that I began watching back with season one, which is not one I particularly loved.

"I always have the same feeling watching Ellen Page - I just want her to do more interesting things. I think she’s way more interesting than the stuff she’s in. I want her to write a book or run for president or something! She’s underused in most of the stuff she's in, including this."
