The Nest: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on The Nest, a new thriller from the writer of BBC One’s Bafta-winning drama Three Girls.

Set in Glasgow it follows a wealthy couple and the teenage girl they ask to carry their baby.

The Nest started on BBC One on Sunday 22 March and is available now on BBC iPlayer.

Scott says: “It goes against every convention of a drama that you are normally comfortable with"

"Martin (Compston who plays Dan) said during the Must Watch interview that essentially when you start watching it, you think it is going to go one way, and it ends up going in a completely different one. Without being too spoilerific; the current set up is essentially about whether Kaya, who is one of the characters, is being the person who she is portrayed to be.

"You think this is going to be the dynamic for the rest of the series, the sort of 'is she good, is she bad?' However in the next episode it goes in a completely different trajectory.

"I find that so exciting. I was thinking in that episode, 'is it just going to be a continuation of where we were before?' At the end of it, I had no idea where it was going to go. I think it takes the normal conventions of where you think something is going to go in a drama and then it takes it in a totally different direction. It goes against every convention of a drama that you are normally comfortable with.

"I'm really excited for where the series goes."

Hayley says: “It’s such an unusual premise for a thriller"

"I loved this, I thought it was such an unusual premise for a thriller because the stakes are always higher when you bring a baby into the situation. There's such a sad visceral desperation around infertility, it's such a world-shattering heartbreak. It makes for perfect ground for doing something rash and possibly unwise, like what the couple here have done.

"I thought the fights between the couple, her blinkered need for this baby even though she's smart enough to know it is risky and his desperation to make her happy... it made me think that there is something in this show that is new and real emotionally.

"It has got James Harkness in it, who is fast becoming one of my favourite actors. He has a supporting role as a social worker, but you might remember him from The Victim a while back. There's a lot about this show that I liked about The Victim too - it has the same sort of ambiguousness, the same foreboding. So if you like this (which I think you will because it is great), then you should go and check out The Victim on iPlayer."
