Peacemaker: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell review Peacemaker on Sky Max.

John Cena stars as violent vigilante Peacemaker in James Gunns’ spin-off from DC’s The Suicide Squad film.

Hayley says: "Puerile nonsense and it never claimed to be anything else"

"It’s not the kind of thing I would normally watch but I find it very likeable. Tonally this is totally different to the MCU because it isn’t Marvel – it’s DC Comics, but that said it’s closer to Deadpool than the recent dark, gritty Batman movies. If you like Deadpool this is more your speed. It’s teenage toilet humour, it’s absurd, it’s silly and it's fun.

"It points out how ridiculous the whole superhero thing is while also being a superhero thing. I think it’s exactly the show it wants to be. It’s puerile nonsense and it never claimed to be anything else so you’ll either be immediately in or know it’s not for you within about two minutes. It’s worth a go.

"I’m a huge fan of the stupid opening sequence where the characters all do a choreographed dance sequence. You just go ‘how did any of these ideas go through?’ but you’re very glad they did."

Scott says: "You can tell they’ve had an awful lot of fun with it"

"It’s a Must Watch for me because it doesn’t do the thing which we’ve criticised Marvel for doing so many times. Marvel has a tendency on just thinking a TV show is a film cut up into fifty minute episodes so it never feels like a film, or a TV show. The plot and tone can also feel uneven.

"However, Peacemaker makes it work because it has a lot of humour and a lot of energy. You can tell they’ve had an awful lot of fun with it. The pacing and the tone is exactly what I think audiences love and I’m not against film franchises spinning off into TV but it has to be done properly with a lot of heart, and I reckon this does.

"It feels like TV. It doesn’t feel like it’s for the big screen - it feels like it’s for the small one."

Peacemaker is available now on Sky Max.
